4 Ways for Knitting in the Round
Jen LucasDescription
Double-pointed needles (DPNs): DPNs are typically used with four or five needles to knit in the round. This method is ideal for small circumference projects, like socks, mittens, or the sleeves of baby sweaters. DPNs come in various lengths, so you can experiment with different sizes to find what works best for your knitting style.
Single circular needles: Another common way to knit in the round is using a single circular needle, which has a flexible cord connecting the two needles. This setup allows for round knitting and comes in a range of lengths, with 16”, 24”, 32”, 40”, 47”, and 60” being the most common.
Two circular needles: This method is a great option for small circumference knitting. In the two-circular-needle technique, the stitches are divided so that half are on one needle and the other half on a second needle. You then knit one set of stitches at a time. This method is commonly used for projects like socks.
Magic loop: The magic loop method involves using one longer circular needle, typically 24” or 32”. The flexible cord is looped in such a way that two loops form on either side of the project, allowing you to knit across one half while the other half rests on the cord.
