Meet Pam Howard, fashion and garment sewing expert, and learn to choose the right kinds of fabrics for chic tailored knit garments. Follow along as Pam shares tips for cutting knits without stretching or color shading, and shows basic construction seams for these fabrics.
Choosing Patterns & Preparing Knits (20:16)
Discover how to make good pattern choices for stable knits, and even how to adapt some designed for woven fabrics, along with pattern styles to avoid. Then learn how to use fusible stay tapes and high-quality fusible interfacings to stabilize your knit garments.
Assembly Your Way (21:42)
Pam will help you move beyond the pattern instructions and use a thoughtful construction order for knits. You’ll also learn how to bind necklines and other garment edges for a professional finish, and how to use a flat construction method for sleeves.
Knits That Fit (21:01)
For tailored knit garments that really fit, discover how to use pin-fitting to make perfect adjustments before constructing seams. Then press your seams using Pam’s tips to prevent shine and unwanted creases for refined results. Pam will also offer several elegant seam finishes to consider.
Linings, Underlinings & Hems (24:22)
Linings and underlinings aren’t just for garments made from wovens. In this lesson, Pam will help you decide when to use each method and how it affects your hemming options. Then you’ll learn how to make perfect hems for stable knits by hand or by machine with a twin (double) needle.
Waistband & Inspiration (23:10)
Love knits but hate bulky elastic waistbands? Learn Pam’s technique for a smooth, seamless elastic waistband that’s comfortable and flattering. Plus, Pam will provide inspiration for incorporating the techniques from class into beautiful, flattering knit garments.
Pam Howard, owner of Pamela’s Closet, Inc., teaches intermediate to advanced clothing construction, specializing in precision sewing, tailoring and couture techniques. Pam has been sewing since she was 14 years old, originally taught by two neighbors in her hometown in Virginia. She is a member of the American Sewing Guild (Atlanta Chapter), and has taught at five national ASG conventions and at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expos in Atlanta, Kansas City, Chicago, Minneapolis and the Washington, D.C., area. In 2005, Pam launched her own sewing retreats, Tailoring Boot Camp, held at a bed-and-breakfast in Georgia.
