Class Sessions
Meet your instructor, Marty Miller, and dive right into extended stitches, the basis of foundation stitches. Discover the proper technique for making extended stitches in single, double, half double and triple crochet, and see how this stitch can help you not only with foundation stitches but throughout your crochet projects. Then, master your first foundation stitch as Marty walks you through the foundation double crochet and shares her invaluable “stitch and pinch” method.
Basic Foundation Stitches (21:04)
Say goodbye to too-tight edges as you round out your understanding of the basic foundation stitches, adding single, half double and triple crochet foundation stitches to your repertoire. You’ll love being able to create fabric that is the same width on top as on the bottom. See how easy it is to substitute foundation stitches into your favorite pattern!
Using Foundation Stitches (16:12)
Now that you feel confident creating foundation stitches, see how they can be used to work with yarns that are tricky to stitch, including ribbon and bouclé. Discover how this stitch makes adding stitches at the end of a row a nearly seamless experience, great for skipped stitches and bottom-up sweaters! Finally, crochet along with Marty as you make the first pattern included with this class, a handled crochet bucket, and discover how using foundation stitches at the top will allow you to create connected handles right where you want them!
Eyelets (32:19)
Learn to make double crochet eyelets, a foundation stitch you can use to start stitch patterns worked with shells and clusters, the perfect way to eliminate stretched-out chains. Marty demonstrates how to work into stitches — and into spaces — as you create scallops and squares with this wonderful technique! Then, learn the secret behind creating beautiful and strong granny rectangles, perfect for blankets, clothing and even a tote bag, the pattern for which is included in your class materials.
Foundation Stitches in Pattern (27:56)
Create fabric designs that ripple, curve and zigzag! Learn the simple textured pattern that combines multiple foundation stitches in the same row. Then, learn to make increases and decreases using foundation stitches and master Marty’s “Triple Ripple” design, which is as beautiful as it is simple!
Foundations in Filet, Mesh & More (27:07)
See how to handle skipped chains when working in foundation stitches and how to add chains, too! Create textured stitches such as filet mesh, V stitches and even shells and get amazing results as you switch your foundation chain for foundation stitches.
Tunisian, Colorwork & Beyond (20:04)
Change colors as often as you like and know that your edges will always match as you see how to incorporate foundation stitches into your colorwork. Plus, learn to use foundation stitches when working the Tunisian simple stitch so you always know where to insert your hook. Finally, see how Marty translates a standard stitch pattern using a foundation chain into one using foundation stitches. You’ll love the look and how easy it is!
