Meet your instructor, Amy Lindenberger and learn about her unique approach to using colored pencils. In this lesson, you’ll explore the properties of Claybord, an inexpensive, easy-to-find surface for your soft focused landscape. Amy will also help you get your project set up with a line drawing and a coat of powdered graphite.
Kneaded Eraser (22:21)
Learn how to identify the different value ranges in your reference photo. Then get Amy’s tips for “drawing” with your kneaded eraser, which allows you to remove graphite for the lightest and brightest areas of your drawing as well as areas with mid-light values.
Rigid Erasers (19:15)
Pick up new techniques for “drawing” with a variety of more rigid erasers. You’ll find out how to use these tools to bring more detailed areas of your landscape to life. Amy will also guide you through using both rigid and kneaded erasers to create a range of values, along with edges such as soft gradations and clear-cut lines.
Adding Detail & Texture (24:01)
Find out how to add graphite back to your drawing surface to isolate darker values and bring contrast and drama to your scene. Along the way, Amy will help you add detail and texture to your scene and expand your understanding of aerial perspective.
Color Washes (33:32)
Bring your landscape to life with color! Amy will teach you how to use a 12-step color wheel to capture maximum value and intensity in your colors. And learn the proper strokes for applying color to this unique surface. Complete this lesson with tips for using solvent to blend colors and create stunning washes.
Color Enhancements (23:11)
Discover how to evaluate and refine your color washes with a round of enhancements. Get tips and tricks for emphasizing different aspects of your piece with dry pencils. Ultimately, finalize your project with a coat of protective varnish and you’re ready to hang it on the wall!
After graduating from the University of Akron with a BFA in drawing, Amy became a portrait artist, completing more than 600 privately commissioned pieces between 1981 and 1996. From 1985 to 2009, Amy owned The Linden Tree Fine Art Studio in North Canton, Ohio, where she taught classes in drawing and colored pencil techniques to students of all ages. Amy has also taught at the University of Akron Department of Drawing, the Colored Pencil Society of America, and Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
