Class Sessions
The Palmer/Pletsch method can help you get a great fit. Meet Palmer/Pletsch founder Pati Palmer and her daughter, fashion designer Melissa Watson, then review fit considerations for different types of knits as you choose fabric for your next sewing project.
Tissue-Fitting Essentials (10:28)
Melissa explains the Palmer/Pletsch method and how you can add key adjustment lines to any pattern. Learn how to choose the correct pattern size and prepare your tissue pieces for fitting by marking seam lines and reinforcing with tape.
Fitting a Basic Tee (38:31)
Melissa tests a basic T-shirt pattern on Pati and shows how to mark needed adjustments. You’ll learn how to alter pattern pieces to modify armholes, bust, side seams and more. A second tissue fitting helps you further refine the pattern. A fabric fitting helps you check overall balance.
Fitting a Wrap Top (22:37)
For tailored knit garments that really fit, discover how to use pin-fitting to make perfect adjustments before constructing seams. Then press your seams using Pam’s tips to prevent shine and unwanted creases for refined results. Pam will also offer several elegant seam finishes to consider.
Fitting Knit Pants (24:47)
Love knits but hate bulky elastic waistbands? Learn Pam’s technique for a smooth, seamless elastic waistband that’s comfortable and flattering. Plus, Pam will provide inspiration for incorporating the techniques from class into beautiful, flattering knit garments.
Your Instructor
Pati Palmer is a pattern designer and sewing instructor with more than 37 years of experience. She has designed more than 200 patterns for The McCall Pattern Company, and she’s the author of 10 sewing books. Pati taught sewing seminars throughout North America and Australia for 15 years before establishing the Palmer/Pletsch International School of Sewing in Portland, Oregon. Melissa Watson is Pati’s daughter, so it’s no surprise that her love of fashion and sewing can be traced all the way back to childhood. Melissa designed a line of print fabrics for Springs Creative and co-designed the DIY Line for McCall’s. Soon after that, she began designing for the Palmer/Pletsch line at McCall’s creating patterns that appeal to the next generation of sewers.
