Microwave Cozy Bowl Pattern Download
DIY Microwave Bowl Cozy
Level: Easy
What You Need
- Two 10″ squares of batting (100 percent cotton only)
- Two 10½” squares of fabric (100 percent cotton only)
- Thread (100 percent cotton only)
- Fabric marker
- Pins
Pro Tip: Double check all fiber content, as the materials must be 100 percent cotton to be microwave-safe. Never use polyester, rayon, nylon or metallic threads, fabrics or batting — they will melt or catch on fire in the microwave.
Instructions
1. Stack the Fabric
Place one of the batting squares on top of a fabric square, with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. Sew two diagonal lines from corner to corner. Repeat with the remaining squares of batting and backing.
2. Make Your Marks
Fold the quilted square in half, right sides together. Mark 1″ from the center fold on the side. Also mark 1½” from the edge along the center fold. Draw a line connecting these marks. Sew on the line, then trim ¼” from that sewn line, as shown above. Repeat on the opposite side.
3. Repeat
Unfold the square and refold it in half the other way. Repeat Step 2 on the remaining side of the quilted square. Repeat this process on the second square, so both are the same.
4. Layer and Pin
Layer the two quilted squares, right sides together, and pin near the trimmed seams on each side.
5. Cut the Corners
Place a ruler on one corner of the two layered quilted squares. Measure 1″ on the sewn seam. Cut along this line, removing the corner of the square. Repeat on all four corners.
6. Stitch
Sew a ¼” seam all the way around the edge of the quilted squares. Leave an opening a few inches long.
7. Close the Gap
Turn the piece right-side out and pin along the edges to keep the fabric in place. Pin the opening closed, tucking the raw edges into the seam allowance.
Topstitch ¼” around the entire edge of the bowl, securing the raw edges from the opening into the seam.
The bowl cozy is now complete — now to heat up a bowl of soup!
What size is the bottom of the bowl?

I place the two pieces wrong sides together and stitch 1/2″ around the top. After stitching, I use pinking shears and trim the top edges. I think the turning and then top stitching to be the most difficult step. Placing the pieces wrong sides together also makes this project much quicker.

Great tutorial! I made a 2 and 1/2 inch dart rather than 1 and 1/2 inch and it fit all the bowls and soup mugs better. You can change the size so easily for this project. Thank you!

I saw on another post, you can just measure the bottom of any bowl with a tape measure. Maybe add an inch or two.
It’s too bad the person making the bowl cozy did not think to take advantage of the grid on the mat. That way it would be easy to see the measurements as described in the instructions.

Question: My batting is “100% natural cotton, needlepunched with a synthetic scrim for strength” Does that fit the criteria for this project?

No. It should be 100% cotton. Scrim includes glues, etc. Try something like Pellon Wrap and Zap – it has no scrim.

I must have a mental block. #5 says, “ Place a ruler on one corner of the two layered quilted squares. Measure 1″ on the sewn seam.” Looking at the photo, with the ruler…I don’t understand. Do you mean measure DOWN 1” on the stitched line, from the first step, and draw your line across the corner there to cut??
You cut 1” from the corner of the batting, keeping the already-sewn line under a straight edge on your ruler so the cut is perfectly perpendicular to that sewn line. Hope this helps!
The 6″ line on the ruler is placed on the line previously stitched. To me, the directions do not match the picture correctly. Directions say to measure 1″ along that stitched line; however, the picture shows 1.5″ from the corner. I just finished making the bowl. I cut exactly where the edge of the ruler is placed – 1.5″ from the corner. Just note, this makes a cozy that should fit about a 7″ diameter bowl. The sides of the bowl are not super tall, but I think it will still protect hands from heat. Good luck!

Is there a pattern for a dinner plate
I am having problems with uneven and skipped stitches with topstitching the 4 layers. Using 90/14 needle, tension between 2.5-3, walking foot too. Any suggestions to correct this problem?
Make the batting smaller than the material, like 10” material then do batting at 9” or 9 1/2” this will give you room to sew easier on the edges. I am going to make some of these! Have fun!
Use a 3.0 – 3.5 stitch for the topstitching. A jeans needle is also good for topstitching.

I don’t understand why my cozy turned out smaller than the bowl? It was supposed to fit 8″ bowl ?
I think this pattern is for a 6” bowl.
You can try and adjust pattern size for larger bowls…ie: 12×12” for 8” bowl

Why the need for 10’ batting pieces 10 1/2’ fabric pieces? It looks like in picture #6 the 1/2’ of extra fabric has been trimmed away but no instructions about how or when to do
so. Thx for your help.
If you center the batting on the fabric, there will be 1/4″ of fabric extra around the batting. This will make it less bulky when you turn it inside out.
This with a kitchen towel and a hotpad will make a great Xmas gift

Thanks for these clear instructions. I was given on as a gift and use it to hold bowls just heated in the microwave, which are too hot to hold in my bare hands. Doesn’t have to be soup….

I’ve made these before but never trimmed off the corners. I don’t see the need to honestly. I also add a hanging loop. Btw they are also useful when serving bowls of ice cream.
I use my bowl cozies and a plastic splatter cover. If I use a cozie that has points at the corners, the points can get pushed down into the bowl of food or otherwise get in the way.
