Granite Stitch Is a Simple Technique for Crocheting Cool Texture

The granite stitch is a technique of many names. Also known as moss stitch and seed stitch, it’s a simple crochet stitch that gives an eye-catching texture. Here’s how to implement it into your next project.

Level: Easy

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet

    • Instructions

    Foundation Chain

    Chain an even number of stitches. We made 24, but you can chain however many you need.

    Row 1

    Single crochet in fourth chain from hook. Chain one, skip one chain, single crochet in next chain.

    Repeat (chain one, skip one chain, single crochet in next chain) all the way across the row, ending with a single crochet in the final chain. Turn and chain 2.

    Row 2

    Sc in first ch1 space. Chain one, single crochet in the next ch1 space. Repeat (ch1, sc in the next ch1 space) across row.

    End with a single crochet in the ch3 that’s at the end of the row. Turn and chain 2.

    Row 3

    Repeat row two, but end with a single crochet in the chain two space at the end of the row. There is no chain three space.

    Repeat to complete the pattern.

    Variations

    This is just one way to work the granite stitch. The instructions in each pattern should tell you specifically how to do the granite stitch the way the designer intended. Here are some other ways the stitch can be done:

  • Begin with an odd number starting chain; make the first single crochet in the third chain from the hook instead of the fourth.
  • Use a chain one instead of a chain two for the turning chain.
  • Some versions don’t use a turning chain at all.
