Stitch Up a Granny Square With Lots of Heart

If you absolutely LOVE granny squares, here’s how to prove it: start every square with a heart. You’ll finish your square with traditional granny rounds, which means you can easily mix and match this square with other motifs.

Granny Square with Heart

Level: Easy

What You Need

  • Worsted weight yarn (we used Sprightly Acrylic Worsted in Black, Suede, and Misty Purple)
  • Size H (5mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Pro Tip: You can use any yarn and hook to make these squares, just remember that the weight of your yarn and size of your hook will change the finished size of your square.

    Abbreviations

  • Ch – Chain
  • Dc – Double crochet
  • Sl st – Slip stitch
  • Tr – Triple (or treble) crochet
  • Instructions

    Round 1

    Chain 4.

Work all of the following stitches into the fourth ch from hook:

    3 tr, 3 dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 4 tr.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

    Round 2

Join the new color of yarn in the top of the ch 4 stitch that began round 1.

Working into same stitch: ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc (first corner made).

Ch 3, skip the next 5 sts, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc (second corner made).

Ch 3, skip the next 3 sts, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc (third corner made).

Ch 3, skip the next 5 sts, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc (final corner made).

Ch 3, and sl st to top of first ch 3 to close round.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

    Round 3 and Beyond

From here on out, you’re working traditional granny rounds. Follow the instructions below, just adding an additional ch 1, 3 dc between each corner as you add more rounds.

Join new color of yarn in any ch-3 corner space from Round 2.

Working in that same space: ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc (first corner made), [(ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp] 3 times, (ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, sl st to top of first ch-3 to close round.
