Pattern Description:

The Wagon Wheel Quilt was inspired by the country song, "Wagon Wheel". The image of turning wooden wheels on an old horse- pulled wagon captured my imagination. So the wagon wheels on the quilt are made from a rich brown flannel to simulate real wooden wheels. The borders are the same rich brown as a dirt country road.

Wagon Wheel is a beautiful quilt designed to be made with ease, even for a beginner. The wheels are made from large circles, sewn to the quilt and then the fabric is cut away to reveal the design.

The applique and the quilting are done at the same time. As you sew the wagon wheels you create a beautiful outline of the wheels on the back of the quilt. The binding is a shortcut method where the edges are sewn all around and then clipped to fringe.

Every step in this quilt was planned to create the most beautiful quilt possible in the most efficient way possible. There are numbered steps and photographs to guide you. The pattern pieces are full size designed to be printed from standard computer paper.

Materials:

  • 12 fat quarters for the front of the quilt (a fat quarter is a 18x21 inch (46x53cm) piece of fabric)
  • 1 piece batting 74x65 inches (188x165cm) or twin size. I like Warm & Natural because it is 100% cotton and has a 10 inch( 25cm) spacing for quilting.
  • 1 piece muslin fabric 74x65 inches (188x165cm) I like muslin because it is easy to find in a wide width and gives an old fashioned look to the back of the quilt. Muslin is a traditional quilt backing
  • 4 3/4 yards (4.34m) chocolate brown flannel (This is a large amount because the fabric is double layered)

You Will Also Need:

  • Pointy small scissors for careful detail cutting
