The process of storyboarding is an essential first step toward bringing any video, film, or movie to life. In this class, you’ll learn how to express your creative vision in a detailed storyboard that incorporates shots, scenes, cuts, composition, camera movement, and so much more.
You’ll need a few tools to help express your vision as you begin the storyboarding process. We’ll start this class by covering the materials you’ll want to collect before you make your first sketch.
Of course, creativity has no bounds, but in video production, you’ll need to work within the parameters of a visual frame. There are a few standard ratios you’ll most likely encounter, so we’ll cover the most common dimensions in this session.
A storyboard is typically broken up into several different parts. We’ll discuss the elements of a storyboard to help you better understand the process of expressing your vision.
When working with a script, it’s important to understand the different parts of a story and the functions they have when planning your narrative. In this session, we’ll discuss the building blocks of a narrative, such as shots, scenes, sequences, acts, etc.
Let’s take a deeper dive into the types of shots you’ll probably use in your storyboard. We’ll talk about the differences between various types of shots, what functions they often have, and how to indicate them in a storyboard.
Next, we’ll explore a few different types of camera movements that are often used in videos, films, and movies. In this session, you’ll learn about the nuances of camera movements and the functions they have, as well as how to indicate them in your storyboard.
Like camera movements, the types of shot cuts you use in your production can play a big role in the outcome of your final product. We’ll dive into different types of cuts, what functions they have, and how to indicate them in your storyboard.
The rule of thirds is a creative practice that involves dividing your visual space into thirds to help you achieve a more balanced composition. Learning how to use the rule of thirds is a great skill for any artist regardless of medium and is especially helpful for video production.
In video production, you have the benefit of working with different planes that extend beyond a flat surface. In this session, we’ll take a closer look at the use of depth of field in different types of shots, as well as how to draw the viewer’s attention to certain details in your storyline.
Composition is key in any storyboard. With a few examples, you’ll learn the impact of including (or excluding) specific details in your composition and the importance of strategic framing in your shots.
Block-ins are quick, simple sketches used in storyboarding to help you visualize your narrative more clearly. In this session, we’ll explain how to use block-ins and discuss elements like beats, rhythms, timing, and punchlines.
After outlining your storyboard with block-ins, you can begin sketching out your final panels. We’ll explore techniques for adding detail to your storyboard, as well as making corrections and improving upon your original ideas.
Once you’re happy with the storyboard you’ve sketched out, you can continue adding final details that will help bring your shots to life. You’ll also learn how to add technical instructions to your storyboard that will provide clarity once it’s time for filming.
