Begin as Kateri goes over the tools and materials you’ll need to get started, including brushes, palettes and paint.
Get started on your first project: a botanical study of a mushroom and acorns. Follow along with Kateri as she guides you step by step. You'll see how to add details, textures and more.
Start your second project: an atmospheric landscape of a cornfield in autumn. For this one, you'll use an expanded palette. First practice your washes for the sky and background. Then add texture and fill in the foreground to create the illusion of depth.
Finally, complete your third and final project: a bluebird on a flowering branch. You'll use the primary palette with the addition of burnt sienna.

For watercolorist Kateri Ewing, painting is all about capturing the awe she feels for the natural world. In preparation for painting, Kateri regularly walks and photographs the woods, meadows and waterways in two of her favorite places near her home in western New York state: Wyoming County and Knox Farm State Park. Kateri's passion for painting and drawing is infused in her teaching, and sharing her techniques with students of all ages is her favorite thing about being an artist. Kateri's original watercolors are currently represented by Meibohm Fine Arts.
