Learning how to sketch is a great skill that will help you advance your drawing skills even further, and you probably already have many of the tools to get started. In this class, we’ll break things down step by step and give you the skills you need to start sketching like a pro.
One of the beautiful things about drawing is that you don’t need many tools to get going. All you really need is a bit of paper, a few pencils, and a good eraser. We’ll go over the essentials in this quick session.
Let's start by framing our drawing and figuring out the space we need. Take a moment to consider whether you'll need more horizontal or vertical space, and lightly sketch out a line to ensure that your drawing sits just right in your workspace. Then, visualize a grid before diving into the actual drawing.
From the initial line we made, we’ll move on to outlining the rest of the objects in our drawing. We’ll explore different ways to use lines for expression and discuss the importance of finding relationships between the various elements of our composition.
Once we have the placement of our objects sketched out on our workspace, we’ll take a further look at the shapes involved in our main subject. We’ll demonstrate how to take complex details and simplify them into their most basic geometric forms.
After drawing out the shapes and forms of our composition, we can begin to identify the lines that will give our drawing depth. We’ll explain how to use perspective and foreshortening to add a three-dimensional quality to your subject.
When sketching quickly, it’s easy to make mistakes that you’ll want to adjust once your composition starts to come together more clearly. In a second pass, we can make adjustments to the errors that we might have made in our first pass.
Once we have made any necessary corrections to our drawing, we can then add details like creases, folds, and lines to emphasize the focal points of our composition.
Using a 2B or 4B pencil, we can begin to accentuate and stylize the final contours of our subject. We’ll discuss key areas to add shadows or highlights in order to emphasize the forms in your drawing.
With our trusty eraser, we’ll clean up any unnecessary marks or strokes that don’t belong in the final composition. Then, using a bit of ink, we’ll give our drawing a finishing touch and outline the final silhouette of our subject.
