This is a technique-focused class rather than a project-based one, so feel free to use any weight of yarn you have on hand, along with appropriately sized knitting needles. I'm using a different color for each square style to help demonstrate the techniques, but you're welcome to get creative. Modular knitting works especially well with gradient yarns or those with medium to long color repeats.
No matter how large your mitered square project becomes, it all starts with the very first square. This is the only time you'll need to begin from scratch.
To expand the width of your project, use this square. Simply keep adding these along the edge until you reach your desired final width.
Use this square whenever you want to increase the height of your project. And remember, your final piece doesn't have to be a perfect square. Feel free to add height (or width) wherever it’s needed to achieve your desired shape.
Now that we’ve established both the height and width of the project, it’s time to start filling in the framework. Use this block wherever there’s already a block below and to the left of the space you're filling.
Working with mitered squares doesn’t mean your final project has to be square! In this session, we’ll explore how to use different types of squares for different purposes, and how to adjust the size of certain squares without disrupting the overall pattern.
This is my favorite modular knitting variation, traditionally worked in garter stitch rather than stockinette. Although you’re knitting in straight lines, the result creates a beautifully curved, wave-like pattern.

Modular Knitting is a versatile technique in which you create your knitting fabric in individual shapes (or modules) but because each one is joined as it is knit, there is far less finishing than you might expect. Many modular pieces have an almost patchwork appearance, but a lot of the final look depends on what kind of yarn you use.

In this class we will go over the basics of mitered squares, one of the most accessible forms of modular knitting, and the scallop or clamshell pattern which is my personal favorite. When the class is completed, you will be able to go out on your own and create unique modular knitted items to wear or for your home.
