In this session we will talk a bit about materials you need for successful cable knitting. While you can use any yarn and needles you like, making an informed selection will make your knitting experience more pleasant.
In this session we are going to work on a simple braided cable pattern. This is a great refresher for cable technique and terminology.
While we may be most familiar with cables worked in columns, or cabled stand-alone elements, all over patterns create a textured fabric from side to side. In this session we will take a look at two all over patterns – Lattice and Honeycomb.
One way to add extra texture to your cable patterns is to add wrapped stitches. In this session we will knit a fancy diamond swatch, work cables with unequal legs, and wrap stitches.
Another way to add texture and more visual interest to your cable patterns is to knit in bobbles. They are also often used in representational patterns to represent berries or the center of flowers. In this session we will go over how to knit a traditional bobble, a garter stitch bobble, and a small nub for a more delicate look.
Sometimes a little cabling is all you need! Cable stitches work very well in representational patterns with legs of the cable acting as outlines. For an element, the specific cable pattern is not part of the overall texture of the project but is used for one striking detail. In this session we will knit a lovely Calla lily element.
