Are you ready to unlock the profound reasons why we create art? Join Mackenzie Swenson in this enlightening first video of the 14-Day Beginner Series, where we dive into the heart of artistic expression. Whether you’re drawn to art simply because you feel like it, or you’re searching for deeper justifications, Mackenzie affirms that every impulse towards creativity is valid and worthwhile. In this session, Mackenzie explores the essence of art beyond mere representation—it’s about authentically re-presenting experiences, whether they’re visual observations or deep-seated emotions. She encourages embracing the honesty and raw beauty found in following one’s creative instincts, emphasizing that art isn’t about perfect depiction but about honest expression. Mackenzie challenges the common misconceptions around art-making, particularly the belief that one must be born a prodigy to succeed. She breaks down this barrier with the assurance that drawing and painting are skills anyone can learn with practice and passion. This video demystifies the skills needed to start creating by comparing artistic development to mastering any other craft, like writing or playing the piano. Furthermore, Mackenzie discusses the power of art to capture what photography cannot—the intangible essence of experience that a camera’s lens often misses. Using Rembrandt as an example, she describes how a painting can embody the artist's personal view and emotional landscape, offering viewers a window into the painter’s world. This session isn’t just instructional; it’s an invitation to view art as a window to the world, a medium through which we explore and express our unique perspectives. Whether you aim to capture the subtle beauty of everyday scenes or convey complex emotional narratives, Mackenzie guides you to appreciate the unmediated, direct observation that art uniquely offers. Stay tuned as Mackenzie helps you discover not just how to look, but how to see the world around you through an artist’s eyes.

Are you ready to dive into the colorful world of art and learn how to truly see color like never before? Join MacKenzie Swenson in Day 7 of her 14-day beginner series as she demystifies the vast, fascinating subject of color. From its emotional power to its scientific foundations, this session breaks down everything you need to know to better understand and use color in your art. MacKenzie starts with the basics, revisiting the color wheel we all learned in grade school—but with an artist’s perspective. She explains primary, secondary, and complementary colors, showing how red, yellow, and blue form the foundation for every other hue. Ever wonder why complementary colors like red and green seem to “vibrate” when placed together? MacKenzie even shares a fun anecdote about how this phenomenon startled her during a camping trip! But understanding color is more than just knowing hues. MacKenzie introduces you to the essential elements of value (how light or dark a color is) and chroma (how intense or neutral a color appears). Using clear visuals, she explains how colors exist in a 3D "color space," where hue, value, and chroma intersect to create every shade and tone imaginable. As a practical takeaway, MacKenzie encourages you to see your everyday world differently. “What’s the hue of that chair? The value of the sky? The chroma of that leaf?” she asks. By applying these observations, you’ll start to develop a deeper connection to color in your art. This session is packed with insights and tools to help you bring vibrancy and depth to your work. Whether you’re a beginner or just looking to refine your understanding of color, this episode is not to be missed! Click to explore the magic of color with MacKenzie Swenson.
