Review the supplies and materials needed for the Pie in the Sky quilt. When selecting fabrics what are some of the things to consider ? What level of contrast do you desire in your finished project?
This session is all about cutting. Colleen defines some common quilting terms and reviews the various pieces you need to cut in preparation for construction of Pie in the Sky. You will also learn how to prepare the template needed when making the four-patch circles for this project.
Colleen walks you through the four-patch construction technique and then addresses the fusible interfacing used to create those wonderful circles. You will get details on stitch length, trimming and turning tips for a perfect circle every time.
Application of the four-patch circle is the focus of this portion of the course. Colleen will give tips on how to center the circles onto the background squares, share details on the fusing process and review stitch options for securing the outer edge of the circles. Then you'll move on to the creation of the pieced sashing.
Join the pieced sashing and then arrange the outer pieced border rectangles and squares. A design wall may be helpful during this process. To finish, Colleen will talk about backing choices and quilting stitch possibilities. You will also see a second Pie in the Sky version done with a light color background and jewel tone fabrics.

Colleen Tauke is a quilter, designer, and quilt educator with 40+ years of sewing experience. Of those, the last 17 years have been focused around quilting. Early in her quilting endeavors, she was challenged to piece a quilt that seemed daunting. Fussy cutting, Y-seams, strip piecing, hourglass blocks, a pieced border, and appliqué—all in ONE quilt. This was her first bed sized quilt that would later become a quilt shop sample and win third-place at the Iowa State Fair in the “My First Quilt” division. Since then, she was hooked!
