Learn how to create a beautiful garden oasis that lasts well beyond the summer months, with expert guidance from author and garden designer David Culp. See stunning examples of layered gardens in David's own space, before diving into techniques for making your garden a reflection of the landscape around it. Work with native plants, add personalized decorative touches and more for a garden that's uniquely you. Then, bring texture, color and repetition into your garden for a cohesive space, and design an entry garden that dazzles guests. Up next, David shows you how to plant striking arrangements on steep slopes and shares a primer on borders for a polished finish. Think rock and trough gardening is tough? Think again as David shows you how to create a gorgeous trough and shares his personal recipe for rich soil.
Meet garden designer David Culp and preview the techniques you'll learn to create a gorgeous garden year-round. Your first lesson opens on two acres in the rolling hills of eastern Pennsylvania, as David uses his own property to offer examples of layered gardens and how to achieve the most out of one spot.
Discover David's method of making a garden look like a reflection of the surrounding landscape, rather than one that's artificially superimposed. In this lesson, he'll show you how to accomplish that natural look by taking cues from your own home, using native plants and appropriate ornamentals.
Now that you have a good idea of what a layered garden is, it's time to talk about design. Once again, using examples from his own home, David will show you how he deals with texture and color, and why he's a big fan of repetition in both. Plus, learn some maintenance tips and tricks from an expert!
Take a walk through two of David's entry gardens to learn what it takes to make a statement with the type, texture and color of plants you choose. Then follow him into the gravel that used to be a parking pad so he can give you a quick lesson on creating a water-wise habitat that still shines.
Steep slopes might seem like the last place you would want to plant. But with David's help, you'll see how those hillsides can end up as one of the more visually stunning areas of your garden. Learn how to deal with dry shade, competitor trees and even clay soil, while also getting a primer on borders.
Think that rock and trough gardening is difficult? Think again! Watch as David dispels that notion while creating his own beautiful trough -- and sharing his secret recipe for soil. Then, see how to create drama and perspective by designing vertically.
