If you have been enamored with the beauty of vintage textiles—from 1930’s embroidered household goods to intricately printed hankies, delicate or chunky lace, orphan quilt blocks, doilies of all shapes and sizes, etc., but you don’t know how to use them, this class will give you many practical tips, ideas, and confidence. Pull these treasures out of the drawer or the box in the attic and fall in love with their possibilities in your quilt making. After learning to source, clean, and prepare them for use, Allie shows you how to put it all together in a 20” X 20” pillow top project from start to finish.
Allie shows examples of many vintage textiles that are easy to source and suitable to work with: hankies, table runners, doilies, orphan quilt blocks and more. She then offers many examples of how these lovely items are integrated into finished projects like bed runners, pillow tops, wall hangings, and functional quilts. Throughout, she has used standard quilting and sewing techniques in these samples.
Almost always, textiles need to be cleaned before use. On set, Allie demonstrates some stained and smelly “before” and the revived and refreshed “after” of laces and linens. She gives easy, safe formulas for soaking out that “yuck factor” that really work.
Sometimes a bit of lace or fabric needs to be a different color for the project at hand. Painting, dyeing, and fabric “aging” are simple to do, especially small scale. Allie shows you many ways to get that color!
From start to finish, a 20” X 20” pillow top is designed, its vintage elements laid out, and then stitched down. While everyone’s vintage textiles differ, the concepts presented here show how to pull them together into a wonderful whole.
