Professional knitter and spinner Jillian Moreno will guide you through what ply is and why it's so important to spinning the yarns you want. You'll gain a new understanding of ply terminology, learn about the equipment you'll need, and become comfortable with the motions of ply. Then, Jillian will walk you through each step of plying your yarn with singles, 2-ply, 3-ply, and chain-ply. You'll discover the differences and advantages to each of these plies and explore what fibers and projects they complement. Moving on, get techniques for correcting common mistakes, and find out how to spot a mistake by look or feel! Finally, learn how to measure and plan for ply, achieve consistent ply, and even use commercial yarns as a touchstone when spinning your one-of-a-kind yarn.
Meet your instructor Jillian Moreno, the editor of Knittyspin, and learn more about the types of plying covered in your class and some basic ply terminology.
Get yourself set up to succeed at your wheel as Jillian goes over the effects of different plies on your knitting and demonstrates the equipment you'll need. Learn how to position yourself at the wheel with your Lazy Kate at your side, and practice the motions of plying.
Spinning singles you plan to ply requires a little extra twist. Jillian shows you what to do, then dives into spinning 2-ply, a knitting favorite. See how knitting with 2-ply yarn can affect the finished look of your project and learn to recognize when a ply is unbalanced.
You can make knitted cables really pop if you use 3-ply or chain-plied yarn. Jillian demonstrates how to spin both and uses a variety of plain, lace and cabled swatches to show how the different plies will affect your knitting.
Mistakes are inevitable, but knowing what they look like and practicing to fix them will make you ready to face any challenge. Jillian walks you through the most common mistakes and shares strategies for dealing with them. You'll also learn a technique for matching up your ply colors and learn how to fix plies that have been twisted in the wrong direction.
The final step of plying to knit is finishing your yarn to set the plies and even out the twist. Jillian demonstrates five methods of finishing -- soaking, snapping, whacking, fulling and felting -- and explains which method is the best for your yarn and project.
Consistent plying is key when you're spinning for a particular project. Learn how to measure your plies to get the yarn you want, including wraps per inch, twists per inch and angle of twist. A handy twist-angle measurement guide is included with your class materials, as well as a sample card for keeping track of your hand-spun yarns!
