Add a variety of bold, eye-catching motifs to your knits alongside expert colorwork knitting instructor Mary Jane Mucklestone. Begin by building a foundation of stranded knitting skills before learning how to cast on, read charts and construct ribbing in the round. With the basics down, start stitching a gorgeous diagonal pattern and see how to choose yarns that complement instead of compete. Move on to working small, stunning motifs while keeping even tension and playing with design through two-color shapes and background patterns. Ready to modernize traditional motifs? Discover how to work bold, graphic designs with thick worsted-weight yarn and use them to create a stunning, contemporary star motif. Finally, apply your new skills with a multi-colored, textured cowl project and learn how to block in the round.
Meet Mary Jane Mucklestone and start class by learning foundational techniques that make stranding fun! You'll discover the history of this method before discovering how to cast on, work a sturdy ribbing in the round and interpret stranded colorwork charts.
Work your first pattern, a mesmerizing diagonal stripe, with Mary Jane's tips for stranding two colors that travel in the same row. Then you'll learn about yarn dominance and how it can help make your stitches pop.
After learning how to knit with two colors, you'll discover even more options for small motifs: the dainty dots and checkerboard squares. Mary Jane will show you how to create even, beautiful designs by checking tension on the backside of your work.
Ready for more color contrast? You'll work larger motifs that play with color tone and design by creating solid colored circles on a two color background. Then, switch up shapes with two-colored triangles on a solid background to add variety to your projects.
Begin modernizing traditional motifs by making them bigger and bolder. With Mary Jane's guidance, you'll create a beautiful star motif as you learn how to read the intricate chart and trap your floats.
Wrap up class by finishing a sampler cowl with an eye-catching corrugated ribbing edge, a stranded texture you can use just about anywhere! Finally, Mary Jane will show you how to block your work when it's knit in the round and share exciting, inspiring project ideas.
