In this course, Jen Lucas, a crochet and knit designer, teaches how to make a charming bookmark. The bookmark is created using half double crochet, with a cute fan detail at the end. Jen covers everything from the foundation chain to fastening off and weaving in ends, and even demonstrates how to stiffen the bookmark using glue and water. It's a perfect project for adding a decorative touch to any book.
Jen goes over the supplies you'll need to make your bookmark.
In this lesson, Jen demonstrates how to create the foundation chain for the crochet bookmark. She starts by showing how to make a slipknot and then walks through the process of chaining 15 stitches, first using worsted weight yarn with a larger hook, and then using the thinner cotton yarn for the bookmark with a smaller hook. Jen explains how to maintain tension while chaining to ensure uniformity in the stitches. She also covers how to properly tension the yarn for comfortable crocheting.
Jen demonstrates how to crochet the first row of a bookmark using half double crochet stitches, working into the third chain from the hook. She provides tips for maintaining tension and managing tight chains, setting up for the next step of adding a decorative fan to the bookmark.
In this session, Jen shows how to continue crocheting half double crochet stitches across rows 2-29 of the bookmark, providing tips for counting stitches and preventing mistakes. She then demonstrates how to create a decorative fan at the top of the bookmark with a combination of single and double crochet stitches, completing the crocheting portion of the project.
Jen shows how to fasten off and weave in the yarn ends of the bookmark, using a tapestry needle to carefully secure the tails without distorting the stitches. Once both ends are woven in and trimmed, the bookmark is complete.
See how to stiffen the crocheted bookmark using a simple water and glue mixture.
