Meet Angela Fehr and get started sketching! Angela will walk you through her unique approach for getting to know her subject matter through a series of fun, quick and easy sketches. To start, create a few quick sketches to understand the basic shapes in your scene. Then, learn the importance of value in successful watercolor painting and create some initial value studies.
Gesture Sketching (15:40)
See how value influences the colors you choose as you add paint to your initial contour sketches. Then, stop to evaluate your progress and decide what makes good subject matter for a landscape. Finally, create a fun, quick gesture sketch with expressive, loose strokes. Along the way, pick up tips and tricks for handling your brush and working with watercolor.
Exploring Color (25:58)
Deepen your understanding of the properties of color. Learn to work with a versatile and cohesive color palette while creating a color map sketch that explores the potential range of color temperatures in your scene.
Color Variations (20:13)
Develop your vision for your painting and learn to use reference photos to make informed modifications to your landscape. Angela will walk you through creating a believable winter scene with an eye on altering color and value for accuracy. Then, see how to apply the same techniques to alter the time of day in your scene.
Focal Point (24:52)
Learn how to identify and control the visual pathway and focal point in your landscape. Then, have fun changing it up using reference photos to modify your scene. Create a new sketch with an alternative focal point.
Putting It All Together (35:52)
Finally, bring together everything you’ve learned from your series of sketches to create a beautiful, loose finished painting. Angela walks you through blocking in your big shapes with color, refining your values and adding just the right amount of detail.
Angela discovered watercolor as a teenager after returning to Canada from living with her family in Papua New Guinea. She quickly fell in love with the fluidity and beauty of pairing paint and water. Today, Angela’s artistic journey has included working as a graphic artist, a website designer and an art teacher. Her work has also been shown in solo and group exhibits, as well as in magazines, newspapers and on websites.
