Learning your way around a sewing machine can take time, and even experienced sewers can have a few technical blunders. Here are some of the most common issues sewers can run into on their Janome machine, and how to fix them so you can get back to your project ASAP.
Good to Know: Most of these problems and solutions are applicable to all brands of machines, so even if you don’t have a Janome these may help.
Problem 1: There Are Three Threads at the Presser Foot
If you’re seeing three threads at the presser foot instead of two, your machine is still in the middle of a stitch and the “third” thread is not actually a third thread at all — it’s the bobbin and needle threads looping, trying to form a stitch that you’ve interrupted.
Solution: Check the take-up lever (the metal hook that moves up and down at the top of the machine directly above the presser foot area) is in the highest position, then lift your presser foot. Raise the take-up lever manually by turning your handwheel toward you and “finishing” the stitch. Your fabric and threads should pull out of the machine with ease now, as you are at the end of a stitch cycle.
Problem 2: The Fabric Isn’t Moving
Most of the time, when your fabric isn’t moving it’s because you’re trying to sew with the presser foot still in the upright position. The feed dogs can’t pull the fabric through the machine without the foot down on top of them. When they try, it causes the machine to make a loud sound and the thread jams around the fabric, making a big mess.
Solution A: Simply unclog the jam, remove any excess threads on the fabric and inside the machine, then start again.
If your fabric isn’t moving and the machine is making the normal sewing-like sounds, check to see if the machine is threaded correctly. If it’s threaded correctly (and the presser foot is down on top of the feed dogs), it’s likely your machine is set to the “free-motion” or “darning” set, which disables the feed dogs.
Solution B: Refer to your manual for instructions on how to change the machine back to regular sewing, which will engage the feed dogs so they can pull the fabric through the machine properly.
Problem 3: The Machine Comes Unthreaded
This happens all the time with new sewers, and it could be because of a few different issues. For starters, your threads could be too short, or they weren’t under the presser foot upon starting to sew. This would allow the thread to be pulled out of the needle as the machine sews.
Solution A: Make sure the threads from the bobbin and the eye of the needle are 3-4″ long, under the presser foot and hanging back behind the machine.
Another reason this could be happening is because you finished your sewing mid-stitch and the take-up lever is not in the highest (finished) position. When that happens, the machine tries to finish the stitch when you start sewing, sometimes unthreading the needle because it’s in the middle of the stitch’s cycle.
Solution B: When you finish sewing, before you pick up your presser foot to pull out your project, always check to make sure your take-up lever is in the top position. If it isn’t, turn the handwheel toward you and finish the stitch until the take-up lever is as high as it will go. Then pick up the presser foot and pull your project from the machine.
Problem 4: You Have Loose and Loopy Stitches
A probable culprit: the thread has fallen out of the take-up lever, which can happen if the machine is jammed.
Solution A: Check if the machine is threaded properly, both into the tension discs and the take-up lever. If not, re-thread the machine properly and try again.
Your bobbin tension could also be off and causing this problem. If the thread from the bobbin isn’t going into the tension area on the bobbin casing or in the drop-in bobbin tension area, then loose and loopy stitches can happen.
Solution B: Rethread the bobbin, making sure the thread is properly inserted into the tension areas.
A third spot to check is to see if your tension discs are on to the wrong setting on the machine.
Solution C: The tension dial on the machine should be set to the middle “automatic” setting on the machine. Refer to your manual for the suggested setting if you’re unsure what the automatic setting is.
Problem 5: The Thread Is Really Tight
This can be a pesky problem because it can create an uneven stitch. It’s likely that when threading your machine, you accidentally threaded the spool through the bobbin winding tension at the top of the machine.
Solution A: Double-check that your machine is threaded properly. If everything’s correct and you’re still having these issues, try the troubleshoot below.
The other possible issue is that the tension is set incorrectly. Most of the time the machine sews best on the “automatic” setting, but many new sewers think they need to move this dial a lot. The reality is you can totally leave it alone on this basic setting.
Solution B: Refer to your manual for instructions on how to set the tension at the “automatic” setting, then try the stitch again.
Problem 6: Your Machine Is Skipping Stitches
If this is happening — and resulting in an uneven-looking stitch — your needle may be dull.
Solution: Put in a new, sharp needle. As always, make sure the needle is the correct type and size for your fabric.

I have an older Janome Decor computer, was working great till recently and I dont know what happened. it is not picking up the bobbin thread at all. It will sew along, then I look and it only caught the very first stitch then nothing aty all. I have rethreaded many times, I have changed the needle and bobbin many times. I don’t know why its doing this
Ticket #45324 Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9400 QCP – In the middle of sewing, a message appeared stating that the needle plate was removed. It was clearly in place as nothing changed while I was sewing. I removed the plate and tried reinserting. No change. I still have the warning message. I tried removing the plate and inserting a different needle plate. Warning message went off. Tried reinserting the zigzag plate I was using and the warning message appears again. I tried turning the machine on and off. I tried unplugging the machine. I tried reinstering the straight stitch plate and the warning message disappears. But everytime I try to insert the zigzag plate, the warning message appears again. I’ve scrutinized the plate and I can see absolutely nothing differenct about this plate than the others. Anyone else experence this? Any clue what the problem could be?

I found a similar issue happening with a Janome MC 9900, perhaps the solution would work for your machine as well.
This answer was posted on this small appliance repair site (https://www.justanswer.com/small-appliance/m796z-janome-mc-9900-having-problem-needle.html) and worked for the owner of the MC9900.
The needle plate has plastic connection points that push down on a sensor in the back right of the race hook area. Make sure they are setting down into that area, and also make sure there is no dust blocking the sensor from recognizing the plate. If there is nothing visible blocking the plate from the sensor, there is a manual adjustment you can make to the sensor. You would need to take the case apart and raise up the sensor a very small amount until it reads the plate. Another note is to keep track of the screws when taking apart the case, and take pictures of everything so you can put it all back together.

This sounds like a tension issue. A stitch should look fairly even on the top and the bottom, with the thread joining in the center of the layers of fabric. If it looks like there is more thread on the top of the fabric than below, it sounds like your needle tension is too tight. Try decreasing the tension and test the stitches until the seam looks more or less the same on the top and bottom.
The tension is typically controlled by a dial on the top of the machine, but consult your machine manual for more information on how to adjust the tension on your specific machine.

Your presser foot must be UP when you thread the machine. If it is down, the thread does not get into the tension discs when you thread it. This means there will be no tension on the top thread and this shows up as crazy looping on the bottom.

You can try removing as much thread as you can from outside of the hand wheel. However, some parts of the machine casing will need to be removed in order to get the rest of the thread. This process is best left to a repair tech, to avoid causing more damage.

I have to be very careful that I’m not pulling up on the bobbin case and dislodging it. If it gets dislodged or turned at all, the needle will hit it and create big problems. It’s very scary when it happens!
For Janome-specific advice, I have read others having this issue with other Janome machines advising that when the bobbin starts getting low on thread, and if you’re sewing fast, it will start jumping a lot in the bobbin case and potentially dislodge it. Others have said oiling the wick under the bobbin casing has helped.

Hi. Mine started eating thread cases and my local tech adjusted the thread over and that solved the problem . The machine should not be chewing g thru bobbins cases. I will not be purchasing a other high endvjanome. Some poor design choices there.

hello, earlier I wound the thread on the bobbin as per the instructions when I threaded the bobbin already into the machine and switched the machine from the bobbin mode, it remains in this mode (in terms of the plan, it remains the same, I knew that it was in this mode but sews only on the first stitch / function, it also does not make a bartack! When faced with skipped stitches, the first thing I recommend (which you may have already done) is to change the needle. The main culprit of skipped stitches is a dull needle.
On some machines, there might be certain combinations of needle/foot/thread that simply don’t work, for whatever reason. When I was using my Brother machine, I tried using a topstitching needle with topstitching thread and a roller foot when stitching faux leather, and every other stitch skipped. So I recommend you install a medium-sized universal needle (such as an 80/12), all-purpose thread, and your all-purpose sewing machine foot, to be sure a thread/needle/foot combination isn’t the culprit.
Be sure the machine is threaded correctly, and that the bobbin is wound and inserted correctly. This video (https://www.nationalsewingcircle.com/video/wind-bobbin-correctly-every-time-012119/) gives great tips for winding a bobbin correctly (if done incorrectly, tension can suffer). Also be sure you’re using the correct needle/thread combination. If the thread is too thick for the needle eye, tension problems can arise. If using a thicker thread, such as heavyweight or topstitching thread, either move up a needle size, or switch to a topstitch needle.

If none of those things help, it’s possible the machine may have a timing issue, and a trip to the sewing machine repairman might be in order.

I was given a Janome horizon memory craft 12000. It likely has not been used in 5 years. I turned it on and a message says to raise the presser foot and needle bar and then turn power off and on. Tried several time with no resolution of the message. Any suggestions?

To slowly raise the needle bar, turn the hand wheel on the right side of the machine toward you slowly. This will raise the needle. If the needle isn’t moving, it might be jammed due to thread tangling up under the throat plate. Cut the threads to release and allow the needle to move, then remove the bobbin to clear out the knotted thread.

I have a problem with my upper tension on my Janome MC 9900. A short while ago, it started losing tension. Initially, I fixed the problem by increasing the tension using the settings section of each stitch or the embroidery settings and also increased the tension using the tension screw on the tension unit. This was only temporary as the problem has increased to the point where even the highest tension settings and manual screw do not provide enough tension on the upper thread. Initially when threading the machine, the tension seems fine if I pull lightly on the thread. But If I was to pull the thread through, there is tension and then it gives way as if it has now found the best place in the tension disks. I have checked the thread and it is in the tension disks but when I start to embroider and the tension disks activate, they do not tighten the tension and it results in bunching at the bottom. I have tried the service part to reset the tension but that doesn’t seem to work very well and where the tension should be 3/4, it feels more like just above 0, with the thread passing through the disks without any resistence. I really don’t know what else to try. the disks do clamp on to the thread quite well if I feed the thread from above, but if I thread the machine properly where the thread is going into the disks horizontally and then down, it only holds the tension for a moment before giving way as it gets more inside the disks. Can the disks be replaced without having to buy a new tension unit? is there anything that I am not doing which would fix this problem. I have tried to look inside the disks and don’t see any thread or lint and have cleaned the disks but still no improvement. this is a new tension unit only six months old. any advice would b e appreciated.

Hello Sandra. If your needle isn’t moving up and down correctly, there are a few fixes you can try.
First, be sure the foot pedal is properly plugged in, and the machine is threaded correctly with the needle correctly inserted into the machine. If this is not the issue, check to be sure there is no fabric or thread that is wound around any bobbin mechanisms, and that nothing is stuck under the throat plate jamming up the moving parts.
Clean out any dust, lint and debris from under the throat plate, around the bobbin casing, and also if possible, from the upper portion of the thread path. Using a square of woven cotton fabric, fold the fabric in half and “floss out” between the tension discs. If possible, removing the casing from the upper portion of the machine allows you to dust out the thread path even more thoroughly. This video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nySznUlUP1s) demonstrates this, and while it is on a Brother machine, some of the same principles may apply to a Janome.
It is possible it is an issue with the belt detaching from the pulleys, which control the handwheel/needle bar movement. This video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiNC3CbR52k) demonstrates how to fix that on a Singer machine and some of the same principles may apply to a Janome.

I have a Janome 6600. When I am doing free motion quilting, the top thread shows on the bottom of the quilt. I have no problem on straight line quilting. I have tried adjusting the upper tension but it doesn’t help. Help!
Your upper tension might be too loose, try moving the dial to a higher number, if it’s currently on 4, move it to 5 see how that does etc etc.
I just got a Janome 780C machine two months ago. From day 1, the tension has been absolute garbage. It’s too tight and nothing I’ve done has fixed it. Having the top tension at 0, and still the fabric puckers horribly. I’ve spent hours trying to one tweak at a time, fix this. Presser foot pressure is at 4. Top tension is at 4 and nothing makes any difference. I’ve tweaked bobbin tension a 1/4 turn at a time from tightest possible to loosest. Nothing fixes this. I hate this machine right now.

After my bobbin ran out and I put a filled bobbin in My thread knotted and my bobbin holder popped out and I put it back in but it still knotts up and gets the thread caught.
Sometimes when you wind a bobbin the “tail” gets caught in the winding and the thread is over the edge of the bobbin. You will have to cut the tail very close to the bobbin and remove the extra thread. Hope this helps!
i have a Janome 5300 QDC, circa 2020. It suddenly stopped stiching, the handwheel is locked. Pressing “start” button results in crackling noise but no stiching. I cleaned it thoroughly of all lint and loose threads, still does not work. The nearest repair shop is too far, and too rude to bother with. Please help.
I’m having the same problem, machine froze up with the needle down. The fly wheel won’t move forward or backward. When I turn it on now it says press the needle up bottom but the machine makes a funny noise and the needle won’t come up. P!ease let me know if you find a solution. Thanks
frozen janome, simple fix has to have a full lubrication and eradication of all moving parts, when it is frozen you need to use penetrant like blaster or wd40, you have to remove all the covers. On a real bad frozen machine you need to put it on its side left or right side and then alternate sides, so the penetrant can work thru the bushings and hopefully it is not the motor, then after the penetrant moves thru the bushings, you will see a lot of black fluid coming out of the opposite side that you lubricated, then apply regular machine oil, I apply a lot so it is real leaky, but be careful around any sensors or electrical, wipe excess, this should be done every 6 months, there is even a janome service video about this.

I have Janome 423S. I cannot sew jeans hem on this machine. I tried to adjust the thread tension and Presser Foot pressure. I used Schmetz Jeans 100/16 needles or top stitch needles; and the yellow top stitch thread. The stich is bunching on the bottom side (the right side of the jeans). Can you advise, please?
Are you starting on a seam? You need to have the foot even with the seam to go over it. Find a button the same thickness as the seam to place in fronthelp the foot get over the seam. You can trim some of the seam allowance and also give the side seams a good hammer to soften the material. I’d suggest starting away from the side seams. Also I hem jeans with the right side up. If your uncomfortable place a peice of tape from the back of the pressure foot to the front edge of the machine the width of the hem you want and this will give you a guide to follow for a straight hem. You should also have a longer stitch for top stitching. Hope this helps

Error message “Lockstitch still Stitching” came on my machine…..I can’t get the lock stitch to disengage. I did the trouble shooting with the foot compressor and I reset my machine…no luck……any other ideas?

I’m having so many problems only after I ran over a pin. The thread from the needle is getting caught up underneath.
Suggestions: try putting in a new needle. If that doesn’t work, remove the feed dog plate and rotate the needle by hand. Watch the shaft of the needle to be sure it did not get bent. If that is the case, take to a pro to fix.

I would check the timing of the machine, especially if you have a jam, if it jams running fast, the timing can change, becasue it is under torque then stoops suddenly

I moved teeth to down Position now they will not go back up even if I move those switch over or back
i find with mine that the “dogs” pop back when you start sewing. try putting the switch back to “up” and then run a spare piece of fabric through and see if that works.
Turn the screw to remove the presser foot. You can manually lift the feed dogs with the screw driver by gently prying the pressure foot with an upward motion.

I CANNOT get my machine to sew right. It does not matter what I do. I have had it “repaired” twice, bought the thread they told me to, tried a leader fabric, doesn’t matter. It makes big bird’s nests when I begin sewing. I am going to trade it in if I can’t get it straightened out, and fast.
This happens to me on my Janome MC 6600 P. I was told this I was told that, I was told to use a leader scrap. Finally I learned that if I start off really slow it does not Birdnest. I am a pretty speedy seller and I was just starting out way too fast. It has helped me a lot with bird nesting to slow down. After I get going I can go whatever speed I wish. I hope this helps.
After placing your fabric under the presser foot, grab the 2 threads from behind your work and hold them taut as you make your first few stitches. This has helped me with my JW8100

Try to start sewing about an inch or so in from the edge. You can then either backstitch to get the very edge or turn your fabric over and sew ‘down’ through the edge that was missed.

After winding bobbin machine still says bobbin winder still engaged ( pic. of bobbin on screen). Made sure bobbin spindle was all the way to left,turned off machine, turned back on. After a min. bobbin pic. disappeared and good to go. This has happened twice after I wind a bobbin. I assume something is going wrong.

Change Your needle. It is most likely bent.

has anyone had this problem on a janome mc 10001 or other machines, in regular stitch mode the thread tension is tight and easy to change, but when in embroidery mode the thread tension doesn’t seem to work, switched back and forth and between the 2 modes and threaded correctly?

E1 error on a Janome 6600p is indicative of a blown fuse on the main circuit board. It would be best to take your machine to a reputable sewing machine repair shop in your area. If you have a handy somebody they can replace it
My machine becomes unthreaded after using the automatic cutter.
Also, I was trying to use the zigzag stitch. It would sew correctly and suddenly sew a few straight stitches and then return to the zigzag.
I have tried cleaning out the bobbin holder, put in a new needle and completely rethread the machine.

Did you ever figure out how to fix the machine becoming unthreaded when using the automatic cutter?
That has happened to me before also. The automatic cutter cuts the threads too closely. I usually pull another inch or two out before starting again, then it doesn’t unthread the needle.

My Atelier 7 seems to be getting fussy with thread. With some threads it skips stitches. I have loads of reels of threads it was happy with in the past, now it won’t sew with them. I’ve tried a new, good-quality needle (several times), and I know I’m inserting it correctly. With some reels of thread, it’s fine. I store threads in sealed boxed, so I know they’re not damp or dried out. Anyone else?

yes there is a service video for techs to oil that machine , I have one and the same exact problem don’t use till fixed, I had to remove all covers and oil with blaster and wd 40 till loose then clean and re oil with sew mach oil till it is wet, otherwise your machine will damage all the components, when ever you have that problem the entire machine needs oiled and re lubed, there is some ppl saying the machines never need oiled false, as mentioned there is a service video for that fix, BTW mine was so bad the wheel would not turn and carriage was stuck too, now smooth working great

My thread jammed up underneath,the light dimmed. so i unjammed it. I then cleraned the machine, rethreaded it, put a new bobbin in . Now it is sewing ok, the thread tensions are ok the stitches look good, but ehen i am sewing the machine is so noisey i don’t like to use it now. why do you think it is so noisey. it never was before. It’s a Janome 6600.

Hi . I have a singer brilliance. My needle broke . It did hit a piece of metal I did not realised was on back. I took out old needle, but cannot get a new one in. Do you think it twisted the needle holder.
Janome 5900 stops working and says Error code 5. The hook hits the needle. The needle seems too far back, not a sideways issue. I am stuck! Can anyone suggest a fix? Repairs shut due to Covid rules I think. Need to sort it myself!

On the display the first is the style of stitch eg 1, 8 etc. Press down for the needle position which you can move by pressing the button, then down to the third section there it usually says 2.2, just press the button until you get the stitch length you require. Hope this helps!

Haven problems with this machine. The tread comes out of the needle and when I start to see the tread in not going into the fabric. You can just see the holes from the needle in the fabric.
I suspect that you have your bobbin spool winder engaged (SP for spool). Slide it back and you should be able to sew normally.

Oil only a drop in the center of your bobbin area..the piece of fuzz….don’t take that out. Also unplug your foot pedal and clean out that hole. If you can plug in a different foot control, then you know it is your foot pedal. Take it apart and clean it. If worn out, purchase new one.

My machine won’t zig zag…. Will only sew straight stitches
Wheel on right of my dxl503 is jammed and the needle cannot be raised. Attempting to sew results in the “lo” symbol as though the machine has tried to ride over thick fabric. This seems to be mechanical rather than computerised. Any ideas please?
The needle does not pick up the bobbin thread
Make sure your needle is inserted all the way up and secured with the screw.
It will do this too, if your bobbin winder is not pushed all the way off after winding a bobbin.
Lastly out of time will also cause this issue
My new Janome Skyline S5 will no longer wind bobbins tightly. I have used the alternate thread holder to wind bobbins. It worked perfectly once, but won’t do it again. Any suggestions?
Make sure you are threading it correctly to wind the bobbin. You should hear two little clicks/pops when you thread it. There is a great video on YouTube that demonstrates this. Just search how to wind a bobbin on a Skyline. Good luck!
My Memory Craft 6500’s display won’t go on anymore. It stitches all the different stitches, I just can’t see any details.
There is a dial to adjust the brightness of the screen. Did you turn that by mistake?

I cannot get the tension to correct on my Memory Craft 10000. It is way to tight coming from the bobbin area.
If you are talking that is is to tight on the bottom of your material that is a top tension issue. Bad stitching bottom of material is controlled by your top tension.
Rethread bobbin, take the tail and pull. If it is too tight, loosen the screw a quarter turn, try again. Test your stitch. Is your top thread being pulled under?..increase top tension. Since we cannot see the stitch, you will need to decide if the tension problem is the bobbin or upper tension. Best wishes
My Janome My Excel 4123 is making three parallel stitches rather than a single stitch. It has a pattern for three parallel stitches, but I don’t have it dialed to that pattern. I tried using the zig zag pattern and it did the three parallel stitches with that pattern also.
My machine is making a squeaky noise when sewing.
My new machine while using zig-zag option, machine skips stitches regardless of length or width chosen. Machine has been cleaned, new needle, and same thread. It has gotten worst, 3-5 good zig-zag stitches then 2-5 straight stitches, then 1-2 zigzag, then 2-5 straight. Very sparadic. Help please.

I would say your machine is out of time if you have replaced the needle.
You have to match your needle to your thread. I was at free motion boot camp with a new machine that worked fine, but I chose a pretty new thread for class. Immediately skipped stitches, then broke a needle. The teacher came over, looked inside the cone and it gave the needle size for that thread, changed needle to microtex 90/14 . Worked great.

I am free motion quilting for about 1-2 minutes and then my thread breaks . Change to 90/14 topstitch needle. Check that your thread is in the take up lever. If it is coming out, thread it from the opposite side and thread machine as usual.

It sounds like your foot control has worn out. Or a wire inside has become loose and is touching the other wire.

Try a janome needle
Put a towel on a counter or table. Take your pedal apart. Becareful you don’t loose the spring. Remember the steps you took to take it apart. Clean debris out of it. If you have pets, this could be the problem. Go to you tube for cleaning out your foot m pedal for tips.

This happens to me on my Janome DC2050. The pedal slips and gets stuck under the bottom of my sewing table. I just give it a gentle ‘kick’ to unstick it. If this is the problem then maybe you could try placing some non-slip matting under the pedal.

This is my first Janome and I really like the way it sews. I am having a problem with the stop motion knob on the hand wheel. It will not move like it is frozen. Can you please help?

I have been sewing since the age of six. I am now 71. My issues with threading problems are not due to inexperience. This is my first, and probably last, Janome. The machine no longer knots/cuts the thread. The thread continually hops out of the take-up lever. This has never occurred cured with my Singer and White machines. My 6500 is a challenge every time. Very disappointed 😞.
I have a mc6500 and never had any problems with the machine like you mentioned. I love mine! It’s a work horse. In fact I have the 6300,2-6500 ,6600 and the newer one 6700. Live all of them!
I have the same problem! The thread must be jumping out of the take up lever. I have noticed if I use cheap polyester thread, it’s floppy or droopy enough (or for some other mysterious reason)to stay on the hook. If I use a nice expensive, cotton thread…well, it just doesn’t stay on the lever’s hook for long. Very frustrating.
Thread your take up lever from the opposite side and thread the rest of the way as usua that will fix this problem. JANOME IS AWARE of this issue…they now put a “lock” on the take up lever on new machines.

Be sure you are holding onto the end of the thread that’s through the needle, giving it enough slack.
