Giving a gift not only warms the heart of the recipient, but it also feels good for the giver, especially when the gift is handmade. And what’s better than a handmade gift? One that’s made with a free pattern! Here are 10 simple and free gift sewing patterns that stitch up fast.
10 easy, free handmade gift patterns
A word of warning: although I tried to avoid complex projects, some of the following patterns may not be labeled “absolute beginner.” They look easy, in my opinion, and you can always contact the indie designer through Bluprint if you have any sort of problem with them!
Tetris iPad & tablet case
I have a confession for you: I’ve sewn for more years than I would admit, but my only attempt with a quilt was a disaster. It had been on my UFO pile (UnFinished Objects) for a while, before landing into the trash bin… This one may be my second attempt with this technique: It’s the perfect size for me to finish before I get bored. Add that it’s the perfect scrap-buster project… I want one!

Felt Food Sushi
While this could be a perfect gift for a child, to be used as play food (for a Montessori approach), I can see it for the trendy friend too, to be displayed on her cool Japanese-style dining room.
Warning: Do not eat it — you might be tempted!

Insulated Baby Bottle Cover
Obviously, an excellent present for a new mom, to keep baby feeding bottles warm but what if you sew it for water bottles? Including video instructions, it uses thermal lining fabric.

Microwave Baked Potato Sack
This is a pretty cool gadget you can gift to anyone who owns a microwave. Just be sure you use 100 percent cotton fabric to avoid burning risks! The indie designer suggests to use it to cook potatoes, corn, vegetables, sweet potatoes, or to warm tortillas, taco shells and breads. It’s a really fast project and can be another excellent scrap-buster!

Sturdy Fabric Basket
A cute, sturdy basket (maybe filled with goodies) can be an ideal gift for almost everyone on your gift list: choose the right fabric and you’re halfway to success!
This free pattern is designed to be fat quarter-friendly (or you can always re-use bed sheets for a more frugal version). It’s an easy project, fast to whip up. You have two options: sturdy or soft and achieve the store-bought look of a leather handle using a pre-loved leather belt.

Potion Bottle Plush
Plushies are always a sure hit with kids, but what about a grown-up version? Think about sewing a few of these cuties, adding lavender to the filling, to be used as closet fresheners. No doubt, you’re going to get an “Oh!” or “Ah!” when you will say “I’ve made this for you!”
