Book Cupcakes tutorial step 1

Step 1:

Roll out white fondant thick with the rolling pin and 1/4″ wooden dowels as guides.

Step 2:

Utilize the rolling pastry cutter to cut vertical strips in varying widths.

Step 3:

Utilize one side of the large square cutter to cut horizontal lines in each of the white fondant strips to create the inside pages of the books.

Note: You can continue to use the rolling pastry cutter to trim the books (instead of the square cutter), but I personally like to use a straight edge cutter to avoid pulling the fondant to maintain its desired shape. You can also utilize different shaped cutters or a small spatula.

Step 4:

Use the knife tool to make three indentations on three sides of the rectangular white fondant pieces to create marks for the book pages.

Step 5:

Roll out colored fondant with the rolling pin and 1/8″ guide rings.

Step 6:

With the rolling pastry cutter, cut vertical strips in varying widths just a tad bit wider than the ones you cut for the book pages.

Step 7:

Wrap the coordinating colored fondant around one of the book pages (making sure the indentations are facing outward) and utilize a side of the large square cutter to trim the book cover to size.

Step 8:

Utilize the knife tool to make a couple of vertical indentations on the spine of the book.

Step 9:

Glue the book cover in place. Repeat these steps to cover additional fondant books with the same color, as well as additional colors.

Step 10:

Roll out colored fondant with the rolling pin and 1/8″ guide rings (in your desired color).

Step 11:

With the rolling pastry cutter, trim the colored fondant into a rectangular shape (approximately 2″ long).

Step 12:

Utilize your fingers to shape the fondant rectangle by pinching the four corners a bit and with the knife tool, indenting the center of both the top and the bottom to form the book cover.

Step 13:

Roll out white fondant thicker than the cover with the rolling pin and with the rolling pastry cutter, cut out a rectangle a bit smaller than the colored book cover to create the inside pages.

Step 14:

Shape the white fondant with your fingers to resemble the shape of the cover, ensuring it remains a bit smaller by fitting it over the book cover. Make similar indentations in the top and bottom center with the knife cutter. Use your fingers to press down on the fondant around the perimeter of the pages to allow them to “lay” properly. Glue the white fondant in place.

Step 15:

Roll out fondant in a different color with the rolling pin and 1/8″ guide rings. Use the rolling pastry cutter to trim a strip for the bookmark.

Step 16:

With the precision knife, trim the bookmark to the desired size into an upside down “v” at the bottom.

Step 17:

Shape the bookmark over the center of the book, originating from the top spine of the book and glue it in place.

Step 18:

Roll fondant in your desired color with the rolling pin a bit thicker than 1/8″. Spread a bit of shortening over your fondant, then place the impression mat over it. Utilize the rolling pin to impress your desired pattern on the fondant.

Step 19:

Cut out a circle of the patterned fondant with the 1/4″ scalloped circle cutter.

Step 20:

If desired, allow the fondant pieces to dry overnight, then utilize edible markers to write on the spines of the books or on the pages of the open book!

You can also add actual book cover artwork to your fondant books with the use of an edible printer sheet! If you don’t have an edible printer, you can purchase icing images and have them printed with your favorite books!
