Lace edgings add the perfect bit of pizzazz to any project. In this session, lace knitting expert Corrina Ferguson demonstrates how to work a delicate looped lace edging. It’s the perfect detail to start projects worked from the bottom-up, like shawls and sweaters. Corrina begins by using the long tail cast on, and casts on a multiple of 6 plus 2 stitches.

The looped lace edging is then created by working the following rows:

  • Row 1 (RS): K2, *bind off 4 stitches, (1 stitch remains on right-hand needle), k1; repeat from * to end.
  • Row 2 (WS): K2, *yo, k2; repeat from * to end.
  • Row 3: K2, *(k1, p1) into yo, k2; repeat from * to end.
  • Row 4: Knit all stitches.
  • In this session, Corrina Ferguson demonstrates how to work a serrated lace edging. This edging can be used in a variety of ways. One easy way that this edging can be worked into a project is you can knit the entire edging then pick up and knit along one side to work a shawl or garment from the bottom up.

The Serrated Lace Edging is worked as follows:

    Cast on 8 sts.

Set-Up Row 1 (RS): Knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1—9 sts.
Set-Up Row 2 (WS): Sl1, knit to end.

  • Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k9, cast on 3 sts—12 sts.
  • Row 2 (WS): Sl1, kfb, k2, (yo, k2tog, k1) twice, yo, k2—14 sts.
  • Row 3: Sl1, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1—15 sts.
  • Row 4: Sl1, kfb, k2, (yo, k2tog, k1) 3 times, k2—16 sts.
  • Row 5: Sl1, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog—15 sts.
  • Row 6: Sl1, k2tog twice, k3, (yo, k2tog, k1) twice, k1—13 sts.
  • Row 7: Sl1, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog—12 sts.
  • Row 8: Bind off 3 sts (1 st remains on right-hand needle), k2, (yo, k2tog, k1) twice—9 sts.
  • Repeat Rows 1 – 8 for pattern.

Stitch patterns are often influenced by things found in nature. In this session, Mary Beth Temple demonstrates how to knit a common leaf lace stitch pattern. The stitch pattern is worked over a multiple of 12 plus 4 stitches, and Mary Beth has 29 stitches on her swatch. She discusses how to work the different increases and decreases and how to work a double yarn over when you come to it on a Wrong Side row.

The Leaf Lace pattern is worked as follows:
Note: On Row 8, which is a WS row, when you purl across and come to 2 yarn overs in a row, purl the second one through the back loop.

  • Rows 1, 3, & 5 (RS): K1, yo, sk2p, yo, *ssk, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, k2tog, yo, sk2p, yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
  • Row 2 and all even-numbered rows (WS) [see note above for Row 8]: K1, purl to last st, k1.
  • Row 7: K1, yo, sk2p, yo, *yo, ssk, k5, k2tog, yo, yo, sk2p, yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
  • Row 9: K1, yo, sk2p, yo, *k1, yo, ssk, k3, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, sk2p, yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
  • Row 11: K1, yo, sk2p, yo, *k2, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k2, yo, sk2p, yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
  • Row 13: K1, yo, sk2p, yo, *k3, yo, sk2p, yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
  • Row 14: K1, purl to the last st, k1.
  • Rep Rows 1 – 14 for pattern.

The Bluebell Rib stitch pattern is a ribbed pattern based off a K3, P2 (knit three stitches, purl two stitches) ribbing. One row of lace is worked on the Right Side of the fabric to create a delicate, lace stitch pattern. In this session, lace expert Jen Lucas demonstrates how to work the stitch pattern.

The Bluebell Rib pattern is worked over a multiple of 5 plus 2 stitches as follows:

  • Row 1 (RS): *P2, k3; repeat from * to last 2 sts, p2.
  • Row 2 (WS): *K2, p3; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
  • Row 3: Repeat Row 1.
  • Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
  • Row 5: *P2, yo, sk2p, yo; repeat from * to last 2 sts, p2.
  • Row 6: Repeat Row 2.
  • Repeat Rows 1 – 6 for pattern.

When knitting lace, it’s important to have a bind off that is loose enough that the stitches can be stretched out and blocked properly. There are many ways to create a stretchy bind off edge. In this session, Jen Lucas demonstrates how to work a Knit Two Together Through the Back Loop (k2tog tbl) Bind Off, which is the perfect bind off to finish top-down lace projects.

The bind off is worked as follows:
Knit the first two stitches through the back loops. *Slip the stitch from the right needle to the left needle, knit two stitches together through the back loops; repeat from * until all stitches are bound off.

In this session, knitting expert Corrina Ferguson demonstrates all the necessary steps to complete here Lareina Shawl pattern. It begins with a fancy lace border. Stitches are picked up to work a Latvian Braid before continuing with a striped, slip stitch body.
