Each link goes directly to the search to make it easy for you to price and compare! There are many different forms of wool you can purchase online, and here is a brief review of those types:
Types of wool
- Wool top: combed by a commercial mill, ready to dye or spin. This is the wool that looks like really thick yarn, and is great for beginners and experienced spinners alike. Wool top will spin into smooth, even yarns. You can buy it white and dye it yourself, or buy it already dyed.
- Wool roving: carded by a commercial mill, ready to dye or spin. This is very similar to wool top at first glance, but if you were to look closer you’d see that the fibers aren’t as perfectly aligned as Wool top is. Wool Roving is ideal for felting projects like nuno felting or wet felting. Since the fibers aren’t aligned as well, it felts faster than Wool top.
- Wool batts: carded by an artisan, ready to spin. These are a favorite of handspinners, who love to play with color and texture. Wool batts may be blended and smooth, or full of color and texture. Not one is alike!
- Wool locks: curly longwool locks from a sheep, ready to spin but may need to be washed before spinning or dyeing. Try looking for “washed” or “clean” wool locks if you’d prefer to stay out of the wool washing business. Wool locks can be picked apart with your hands before spinning. Some locks can be over 12 inches long and are ideal for art yarn or “tailspun” style yarns. Look for locks that are at least 3 inches long for easy spinning.
- Wool fleece / raw wool: wool sheared from the sheep, most spinners prefer to wash this wool before spinning or dyeing. Look for fleeces that are clean of hay and debris, and that have a wool lock (staple) length of at least 3 inches.
