What is a rag quilt?
Rag quilts are not created in the same manner as quilting a typical quilt. A quilt-as-you-go technique is used instead! Each block consists of three layers (top, batting and backing) that are sandwiched together and quilted. Once all of the blocks are quilted, they are sewn together to make the finished quilt. The exposed edges are snipped and the quilt is washed, allowing it to fray in the desired fashion. Rag quilts are a welcome alternative to regular quilts, and they sew up very quickly.
Are you interested in learning how to quilt? Rag quilts are the perfect project to start on. Basic skills, like rotary cutting and precision piecing can be learned and practiced sufficiently. Since the edges are frayed and there is no binding, beginners are less likely to be intimidated. Another bonus is that the quilting is done on small individual squares rather than the large quilt. This is much easier than wrestling with a large quilt during the quilting process. Rag quilts can be made out of so many different fabrics. Check out your fabric stash and scrap bins, you may have everything you need right on hand! Flannel, denim, fleece, and quilting cottons are great options for rag quilts.Photo via Craftsy member Fresh Lemons
