Tammy Silvers, the popular instructor of Bluprint’s Quilt Quilted Gifts class, took a few minutes away from her holiday prep to tell us how she makes the most of the season. Thanks, Tammy!
What is the most memorable handmade gift you’ve ever received?
One of my favorite handmade gifts was a box of Barbie clothes that my mother must have labored over for months. Even now, years and, ahem, years later I still remember folding back layers of tissue paper and gasping at the tiny wardrobe inside.
What are your favorite gifts to make?
Finding the perfect project that will showcase my skills and the recipient’s interests is so much more of a rush than any bargain scored on Black Friday. Those are the best gifts to make!
What do you love most about giving handmade gifts?
I grew up surrounded by makers, and handmade gifts were kind of a given in our household. I love that they’re tenderly created by your own hands for those you cherish the most — it’s the perfect mix of craft and care.
Tammy’s top tips for happy holiday gifting
1. Get started now
Make a reasonable list for gift making (you can’t make a bed-sized quilt for everyone) and eliminate the last-minute rush by getting started soon.
2. Take notes
Use a journal to keep track of ideas. From clipped photos to written notes, a journal is the perfect way to land on the right gift for the person who has everything!
3. Inventory supplies
Organize your stash and make sure you have the supplies you need. That way, you’ll be ready to quilt whenever the creative urge strikes!
4. Set a budget
Set a budget so you don’t get carried away (we’ve all been there!). If you’re a little more budget-conscious this year, brainstorm projects that make the most of supplies you already have.
5. Make time every day
Don’t try to have a weekend crafting marathon. Productivity is cumulative and you may be surprised at what you can accomplish in just 30 minutes a day.
