Sew Satisfying: Quick Sewing Projects

sewing

Quick sewing projects are great when you have a limited amount of time to sew, need to whip up a quick present for a friend, or want to make something fabulous with a small amount of fabric. Quick sewing projects are so satisfying; instead of barely making headway on a larger project, you can complete a project from start to finish in one session!

Here are some ideas for quick sewing projects that can be finished in an hour or so:
Fabric cubes: These are simple but have so many uses! You can make larger cubes for storage (I want to make a bunch for my closet) or a smaller set of nesting cubes for a fun baby and toddler toy. You can make the sides of the cubes out of the same fabric or bust through your stash and use up a bunch of your scraps. Cutting and interfacing the sides will take the longest, but the only slightly tricky part is sewing on the bottom of the cube.

Bags and pouches: Tote bags and drawstring bags are also great quick sewing projects. If you’ve been sewing for a while, you can probably whip one up without even looking for a tutorial! If you’d like help, check out Bluprint’s FREE mini-class Bag Making Basics: Drawstring Bag & Bucket Bag with Kristin Link. They have a million uses and are great as reusable gift wrap, too. Pouches are perfect for organizing the contents of your tote bags, plus they are a great way to practice sewing zippers and lining before moving on to bigger projects.

Maxi skirt: A maxi skirt made from a drapey fabric with an elastic waistband is a quick and satisfying project when there’s just no way you can wear something already in your closet one more time without going crazy (or, as an effective method for avoiding laundry, for one more day, anyway!).

Pillows: If you need an easy way to freshen up your living space, pillows are the way to do it. You can easily stitch up 2 or 3 in an hour. If you’re interested in trying something new, consider adding piping to your pillow.

Caftan: Caftans are perfect for lounging around the house or by the pool during the summer months. Since a caftan is essentially a long piece of fabric folded in half with a neck hole cut out in the middle, it’s a quick project you can easily complete in under an hour. Just hem the raw edges and the neck, belt or tie around the waist and you’re good to go!

Baby gifts: Headed to a baby shower? How about whipping up some cute bibs and burp cloths? Babies make a mess, and the new parents will surely appreciate having something cute and handmade to wipe up all the drool and spit up. There are many great tutorials available on Pinterest. You can also find adorable baby toy patterns available on Bluprint.

I call quick sewing projects Quick and Dirties (or Q.D.s which sound like 'cuties') when I want to sew up something fast. Normally there's no pattern I just sit down and cutandsew.
