We makers are all about staying cozy during the frigid winter months. But we aren’t the only ones who need a little extra warmth this season! Because of a cold spell in India, our pachyderm friends are getting some cozy winter wear, too.

The 20 elephants at Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center were all rescued from lives of abuse, and the sanctuary focuses on keeping them, happy, healthy and comfortable — and now, cozier than ever. The staff designed custom oversize coats to help these gentle giants fend off freezing temperatures.

Friendly villagers near the center are also knitting jumbo-sized jackets and leg warmers for elephants. These oh-so stylish coats aren’t exactly quick-to-stitch projects. Each knitted jacket, made up of granny squares–like pieces, takes up to four weeks to make.
The kind volunteers have so far made three super-sized knit coats, with more on the way — and the elephants seem to love them!
