Make your own Swaddled Baby keepsake doll. This pattern is for a swaddled baby, just a little bit smaller than a real newborn. I have included instructions for 3 versions. The first is for making a very basic baby, a perfect toy for a small child. The second is a folk art design baby and the third, a bird baby. You can use the basic baby design and embroider a baby's name and birth date for a very special keepsake. Or use the "blanket" to showcase a favorite and/or special piece of fabric or ribbon. Included in this pattern are instructions for the basic doll, two folk art designs, and templates for 2 bird designs.
This pattern shows you how to use basic needle-sculpting to add dimension to the baby's face. The folk-art designs show how to use raw-edge appliqué with wool or wool felt. The bird baby instructions use freeform design to make a one-of-a-kind finished doll.
All of the appliqué is done with a raw edge which works very well with felt and felted wool.
This pattern is not intended to teach embroidery. I have included some basic instructions for the hand stitches mentioned in the pattern but would recommend referring to an embroidery reference for more information.
This PDF pattern is 21 pages and includes full size pattern pieces for the baby, written instructions, clear illustrations and step-by-step color photographs. It also includes notes on working with recycled clothing and a list of resources.
