Pattern Description:

These adorable mini tote bags with appliqus are fun and easy to make! There are eight designs - a monkey, sheep, bear, giraffe, zebra, beetle, bumble bee and ladybug. Handles are made from 1" ribbon. All the critters have the same body/muzzle appliqu shape. Button antennae/horns plus fabric yo-yos are stitched onto the bags to create different critters. The appliqu designs can be reduced or enlarged to any size. Besides the tote bags, you can appliqu the designs on t-shirts, onesies, quilt blocks, bibs, etc. Instructions are given to sew a machine straight stitch around the appliqu designs. Another option would be to sew a machine satin stitch around the edges. If you don't have a sewing machine, you can embroider the blanket stitch by hand around the edges of the appliqu pieces. A diagram is included in the instructions to hand embroider French knots for eye dots. Instructions to make yo-yos are also included.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

. The finished tote bags are 6" tall x 7" wide.

Materials:

Heavyweight fabric for tote bag - two 7 1/2" squares (duck cloth or canvas works great)
Light to medium weight cotton print or solid fabrics for appliqus - for each critter, you will need one 4" x 6" rectangle for body and one 3" x 3 1/2" rectangle for muzzle, plus scrap pieces of fabric for yo-yos
Double sided iron-on fusible web for fabric - one 4" x 9" rectangle for each appliqu
1" Ribbon - two 11 1/2" pieces for each tote bag (black grosgrain ribbon was used for sample totes),
3/8" ribbon - three 2" pieces for zebra mane (black grosgrain ribbon was used for sample zebra)
Buttons - two 7/16" black buttons for beetle, bee or ladybug antennae, two 9/16" orange buttons for giraffe horns, two 7/8" black buttons for ladybug spots
Sewing thread (sample appliqus were stitched with black thread).
Embroidery floss or perle cotton for eye dots (eyes on sample critters were stitched with #8 black perle cotton)
