Basic Skills Necessary:

  • These skate dresses are rated for INTERMEDIATE sewers as we recommend the use of a serger and the pattern requires limited hand basting, elastic insertion and curved seams on slippery fabrics. As usual, Lee & Pearl have made things as easy as possible with photo illustrated, step-by-step instructions and computer drafted pattern pieces guaranteed to fit together.

Pattern Description:

In honor of all the wonderful skaters who inspire us every four years (and every year in between) Lee & Pearl are thrilled to present the perfect pair of 18" doll skating dresses:

The Short Program
This sleek dress features a jewel neckline with a collar, and a deep keyhole opening in back. The dress can be made with or without long sleeves.

The Long Program
This flirty dress features a lined sweetheart bodice attached to a power net (mesh) or contrast fabric shoulder piece, cut-in-one with sleeves.

Both looks feature a modern-style skirt that hangs smoothly in front and back, with just enough fullness around the hips to create the flattering illusion of a waist on our 18" friends. The skirt, which can be cut in either of two lengths, hangs slightly lower in back than in front, concealing an attached snug-fitting panty with elasticized leg openings.

You'll love these looks and you'll also love the ability to design your own gold medal outfits by mixing and matching our pattern pieces - we've even included bonus pieces that allow you to use the Short Program collar with the Long Program yoke - while exploring a wide range of stretch fabric and embellishment choices.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE: In the Lee & Pearl April 2014 newsletter (available in the newsletter archive at www.leeandpearl.com) we published a set of BONUS SKIRT pattern pieces that turn this skating dress pattern into a pattern for beautiful, form-fitting red carpet, recital and bridal dresses - as well as a stunning Elsa from Frozen gown!

In 2016, that's Pattern #1035: Ola Brasil! Samba Top, Bahia Dress, Baiana Headwrap and Jewelry Tutorials for 18" Dolls a collection of Brazilian-themed patterns, inspired by American Girl GOTY Lea Clark, and also by past and present Brazilian fashions, Brazilian music, and the Afro-Brazilian traditions of Bahia, Brazil.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Please be aware that 18 inch dolls can vary significantly in their measurements. These patterns were developed on a Mattel-era American Girl doll, and will fit differently on different dolls.

  • 1/4 yard light to medium weight 4-way stretch knit fabric
  • NOTE: 4-way stretch fabrics, which typically include Lycra, spandex or elastane in the fiber content list, stretch not only from side to side, but also lengthwise. Test any fabric before you buy it by stretching one corner: to be a 4-way stretch, the fabric must stretch both vertically and horizontally.
  • 1/2 yard 1/4" elastic
  • Matching thread
  • In addition to regular thread, we strongly recommend a cone of "woolly nylon" thread, in either a matching or contrasting color, to use in your serger as the upper looper thread for the rolled hem on the skirt.
  • 2 snap fasteners
  • 1/3 yard power net (4-way stretch mesh) or nude/contrasting 4-way stretch fabric
  • 1 snap fastener, or more as desired
  • 2/3 yard 1/8" elastic in a color that coordinates with your power net (there are several sellers on Etsy who offer inexpensive 1/8" elastics in a wide variety of colors)

You Will Also Need:

  • Though these dresses look sleek and polished with the same fabric used for bodice, skirt and panty, feel free to mix and match colors and fabrics. Remember though, that EVERY fabric you use must have 4-way stretch - even the skirt fabric.
  • These dresses can be finished with a wide range of embellishments: flat-back and hot-fix crystals and pearls, beads, sequins, fabric paint and fabric glitter, 4-way stretch lace overlays, feathers, ribbon flowers and pretty much anything else that might be used on a full-size skating dress.
