I would like to make this cute pouf in a 24" size. How would I alter the pattern?

To determine the diameter (or how long the sides need to be),I had to use Pi - so multiply 24" x 3.14 - so about 75" -- BUT...for some reason it was always a bit too big. So I know seam allowances had to come into play! I made an 18" one and my sides were 55.5" long. I started with 56.5" (Pi) and had to take the sides in one inch. I spent a day trying to figure out why and gave up. I'm a speech teacher not a math teacher! Good luck and let me know what you came up with!
