Pattern Description:

This 1920's newsboy cap, also known as a Gatsby cap, driving cap or 8-panel cap, is now an exciting sewing project. The PDF file is instantly downloadable and can be printed on 8.5"x11" letter sized paper or A4 paper. The pattern contains detailed illustrations of each step of the project and is complete with sewing tips, notions required, fabric recommendations, size measurement instructions, sewing terminology and coupons for your next Elsewhen purchase. The sewing and millinery techniques in this pattern will be useful for future sewing projects and your overall understanding of hat construction.

Fabrics: a wide range of fabrics can be used for this hat. Pattern includes instructions for achieving the right thickness with different types of fabric.

Style Note: This hat, unlike many other newsboy caps and patterns you may find, is designed to come low at the back of the head for a secure fit, have a sturdy curved bill and eliminate a lot of puffy roundness at the top and sides of the head.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • 18" - 24" (pre-toddler to large adult) measuring around the head above the ears


  • 1/4 yd semi-thick hat fabric (wool suiting, corduroy, microsuede, etc)
  • 1/4 yd lining fabric (pre-washed cotton, taffeta, satin, etc)
  • 1/4 yd fusible interfacing (optional)
  • covered button kit (3/4" button)
  • plastic insert from a baseball hat bill

  • sturdy sewing machine needle for thick fabrics
  • thread to match hat fabric
