This is a pretty good tutorial, but you have to read carefully. I prefer point form to paragraphs for directions, so I made a few mistakes as I TLDRd. I would add one tip: hand sew your zip closed at the top before you start sewing things to it. It makes it much easier to keep everything lined up.

Even after reading all the comments I'm still confused about the tabs.

I'm delighted to have finished this ... Never seen in a zip before and I'm not that hot with a machine. It looks great. Only instruction I got wrong was the fact that I should have only sewn the bottom seams initially ...was easy enough to resolve though :0) Thank You!

It happened to me too, it took me a while to understand what I had to do on this step. It's a good pattern though. It would help to have more pictures of the details. I'm sure I will make a lot of these pouches!

I'm about to try this with a laminated lining (iron on vinyl). Has anyone used a laminated lining? If so, should I do anything differently?

I like the pattern very much. However, I did not have any black in when I printed it. I now need to print it again. Sorry.

Love this pattern. Cut 4 out (thinking ahead for Christmas). Made one just to see how difficult it was. And it was a breeze. Thank you so much for providing this pattern.

This pattern's file size is HUGE! It's 57 MB and my printer can't handle it. The images need to compressed.

Was the updated version automatically updated in my pattern location on craftsy or do I have to replace that pattern with a new one?

I believe it will automatically update within your craftsy.

Yes the tab error, then everything else. I was able to make the pouch through extreme frustration and trial and error. There is a you tube video showing how to make a boxie pouch so I follows those instructions. Oh well

Thank you all for your comments on the Free SoChick No Guts Boxie Pouch Pattern. I have uploaded an updated pattern to account for my "whoops" moment of misguiding you on those pesky tabs! I'm glad that you have all been able to work through the error to complete your Boxies! Xx-Melissa, SoChick!

I just completed making a bag with this tutorial. There are several problems with the tutorial. First, on the "supplies needed" section, the fact that you are supposed to use interfacing on the tabs is left out. Second, the size given to cut the fabric for the tabs is wrong. Using what is given, the tabs are WAY too small. The tab fabric pieces need to be cut 2" x 3" each. They work perfectly when cut this size, using the given instructions. There are several spots where clear and precise directions are left out and the photos don't really show what to do. You just have to kind of guess and hope it's right. If you can guess your way correctly through these spots, the bag turns out perfectly.

With all the comments about the tabs, I'm wondering why the tutorial author hasn't fixed it yet.

Hmm, I'm still stumped on the tabs. This is my 2nd project btw. I cut them 2 x 3 as suggested, folded in half so short ends meet, opened then folded short ends toward the center. After all is said and done I get a tab that's 1.5" wide x 1" tall. It seems big, what am I missing?

Got it. The photo in the tutorial shows folding toward the center while viewing the backside of your fabric. This made me think that first fold was just to create a marker of where the center was.

Did anyone add a handle? I want a handle instead of a tab. Seems like the tabs are more work then they are worth.

Try this tutorial for a handle:

Thank you for the link. I've bookmarked it so that I can also add a small handle for my granddaughter's bag. I don't think she would have use for the clasp and a handle is a great alternative.

1. Tab problem: I cut these at 2" x 3" so I had something to grip while I sewed them down. (no interfacing either). 2. Try sewing the gussets at 1.5" instead of at 2". My homedec outer fabric was so stiff, it was difficult to sew those gussets.
3. match your out fabric weight to your lining weight. Overall, this was a well-written free tutorial. It turned out as I expected. Those gussets can be done by a beginner but you need to read the directions carefully.

The pattern calls for two 1 by 3 inch pieces for the pull. I believe that it's an error as I did the math from the PDF and saw that the original is a 2 by 3 inch piece. This will really help save fifteen minutes of WTF during the beginning construction. :D

I made this last night. I agree with other posters that you need to cut the tabs larger. Pattern was okay, if you hadn't made bags before it would have been quite difficult. I am disappointed with the lack of structure. My bag will only look good when it is stuffed. I would use fusible fleece or soft and stable instead of light interfacing if I made it again.

I am having a lot of trouble figuring out the tabs. Am I supposed to fold lengthwise or widthwise? I did it lengthwise...fold each side toward the middle then folded in half, but it still seems so tiny. Please help me... :/

I am having the same trouble as you are. I think that to get the tabs to look like the pattern example pouch, they need to be cut to 2 x 3" rather than 1 x 3" and then follow the directions as written.

I too had trouble with my tabs so I cut them 3 by 4 inches and folded them opposite of how she said to do it. I like how they turned out. This is a great tutorial by the way!
