The Learning to Sew series of patterns by Lilac Lane assumes only the most basic of sewing skills: turning on the machine and cutting out the pattern. Even instructions for cutting are included. These patterns were tested by girls ranging in age from 7 to 12. They are ideal for children or adults as a very first sewing project.
Warm up with a matching set of scarf and mittens! This pattern contains instructions for a very first sewing project. Mittens sized for child/youth and adult. Finished scarf length is 7" x 59". An optional snowflake embroidery is included. Or embellish with special stitches, buttons, or ric rac. Also included is one "Handmade with Love" sew-in label.
3 cuts of quilting cotton, 1/4 yard each for scarf
1/4 yard of quilting cotton for mittens
(could repeat one of the above fabrics)
1/2 yard of fleece at least 60" wide
1 package extra-wide double fold bias tape
1 package 3/8" wide elastic
Tools of the Trade
You will need pinking shears, an iron, pins, a seam ripper, seam gauge and a sewing machine. A rotary cutter and mat will greatly help with this project, although they are not essential. Make sure to have a clean work space with lots of room to spread out and relax while sewing.
What's in the pattern?
Included is one paper mini-pattern with complete instructions to create a scarf and pair of mittens, sized youth or adult.
Also included is an optional embroidery snowflake pattern along with embroidery instructions.
A sew-in label comes with the pattern. The label states "Handmade with Love."
How quickly will my pattern come?
Paper patterns are mailed on a daily basis. Normally, they are sent by first class mail the day after ordering.
This looks complicated. Can I really sew it?
Learning to Sew patterns assume only VERY basic sewing skills. They are designed to be easy enough for a very first project.
All patterns contain a glossary, metric conversion chart and detailed instructions with illustrations to guide you through each step. Lilac Lane patterns have been praised for their thorough instructions.
