Basic Skills Necessary:

  • You should know how to use a sewing machine. If you hate sewing zippers, you'll love this clever pattern!

Pattern Description:

I hate sewing in zippers!

What's unique about this pattern is that the zipper is sewn in, along with the straps, before the bag's side seams are stitched. There are several advantages to this method. It's easier to sew the zipper to a flat piece of fabric than to a finished bag.

By the time you're done, the straps have been stitched FOUR times for added strength.

It's easier to get the zipper perfectly straight because its edge lines up against the edge of the bag's hem.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • This 17 1/2-inch tall x 18-inch wide zippered tote bag has shoulder straps of sturdy webbing and a reinforced base for stability and ease of packing. For a unique touch, add a tassel to the zipper pull and decorate with little buttons to match the print.

  • You will need: 2/3 yard of 48-inch wide oilcloth; 20" (or longer) zipper; 60" of webbed strapping; sturdy cardboard cut to 12 1/2 x 6 inches

You Will Also Need:

  • Optional: crochet cord and matching tassel to make a tassled pull for the zipper tab.
