About the designer

A seamstress in my younger years, I abandoned the hobby for three decades. Then I discovered that people sewed "stuff" other than clothes and blankets. What an eye-opener! The discovery has led to me ...

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • While this is classified as a beginner level project, it is written for someone who has successfully completed a couple of simple sewing projects in the past (ideally, something like a zippered pouch or wristlet). It would be preferable if you were not intimidated by the idea of zippers and buttonholes, even if you have not had previous experience with them
  • Apply fusible interfacing & fleece

Pattern Description:

Inspired by my mom's need for something to carry on days when she "doesn't have pockets", the Hot Hues Convertible Crossbody Fooler Bag is my answer to trying to follow fickle fashion trends!

Imagine making a simple crossbody bag that you can update the look of from season to season, just by changing the button-on flap... or switching out the strap. Instead of spending big bucks trying to keep up with the latest "hot hue", create your own trendy accessory that can transform just by buttoning or clipping! Oh, and in case you're wondering, the top does not open up - hence, the "Fooler" part of the name (which is too long to fit in the title above).

The Hot Hues Convertible Crossbody Fooler Bag is not only a fashionable choice for young and old alike, its two pockets provide roomy storage for just enough stuff for a handsfree shopping day or an evening at the movies.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Your completed bag will be about 9" high by 7" wide at the top (23cm x 18cm). Width at the bottom will be somewhere between 9" to 10" (23-25cm) depending on how you finish off the corners (standard or boxed).

  • Up to 1/3 yd/m of Decor Bond or Pellon SF101
  • 18' x 10" (46cm x 26cm) piece of Pellon 987F (fusible fleece)
  • Several coordinating/contrasting fabrics (3 fat quarters in total should suffice); total fabric usage depends on whether you make fabric straps

You Will Also Need:

  • Two 7" (18cm) or longer matching/contrasting zippers
  • Matching/contrasting thread
  • 3/4" (2cm) wide belt or webbing cut to desired length (optional)
  • Two 3/4" (2cm) swivel snap hooks (if using a chain for a strap; optional)
  • Two 3/4" (2cm) D-rings (if using a pre-made chain strap that comes with swivel hooks; optional)
  • One to four contrasting buttons, up to 1" (2.5cm) in diameter
  • Pins, clips, ruler, fading marker, your sewing machine's zipper foot & buttonholer, iron, pressing cloth, etc.
