This pattern is hard to work with. You have to add your own seem allowance. This pattern gives no material amounts and sizing is difficult.

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for your comments. Just a brief reply: My individual block patterns don't include marked seam allowances because I anticipate many quilters will want to re-size the blocks to fit their projects. If a block is enlarged or reduced, then any seam allowance already included on the pattern would no longer be a true 1/4".

I do say in the instructions that if you want seam allowances marked on your resized block, you can make one photocopy at the correct percentage to get the desired finished size. Draw a 1/4" seam allowance around each piece, and then photocopy this as many times as needed for your project.

But in fact, you don't really need a marked seam allowance on the foundation. Simply leave more than 1/4" of fabric all around the foundation when piecing. After the entire unit is pieced and pressed, trim the excess fabric to 1/4" all around using a rotary cutter. The first time you do this may seem a little strange, but you quickly get used to it :-)

Regarding material amounts -- again, because I anticipate many will enlarge or reduce the block for their own projects, it's not possible to give accurate fabrics amounts. Please note that this is a pattern for a sunflower block with two options -- flower only, or flower plus leafy stalk. It is not a pattern for any specific project - the graphic of three sunflowers in a row shows simply one possible use for the block, not an actual project included in the pattern.

Happy sewing! Beth
