{shine bright} round cut birthstone Round cut birthstone sample blocks
{shine bright} round cut birthstone 20 inch diamond in corner of quilt
{shine bright} round cut birthstone Quilt featuring 16 inch emeralds

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Patience + paper-piecing ;)
  • Circle/curved piecing methods

Pattern Description:

***This pattern is for individual birthstone blocks, not a full quilt (the illustration is meant to provide sample stone layouts for Jan-Dec modern birthstones: garnet, amethyst, aquamarine, diamond, emerald, alexandrite, ruby, peridot, sapphire, tourmaline, citrine, blue topaz).***

One of my favorite things about handmade goodness is the ability to customize every project. But tailoring can be tough! Enter this round cut birthstone block. After all, what's more "made especially for you" than birthday shout outs? ;) (Think of it as a softer version of gemstone jewelry). Stitch a single gem for the corner of a special project, or shower a certain someone with a blanketful of stones. Whether it's featured as the centerpiece or plays a secondary role to your star design, this bling is sure to bring a sparkle to someone's eye ;)

The PDF {shine bright} like a birthstone quilt block pattern contains fabric selection and color placement tips, clearly labeled paper piecing pattern sections, and instructions to sew your birthstone of choice in a range of sizes (10" to 20"). The pattern pieces are scaled to a 20" round block; for other sizes, consult the test patches on the pattern pages to reduce the gemstone to your desired size. I have also included a coloring page for you to experiment with your own colorstories and value placement.

Please note that basic paper piecing instructions are not included, but I would be happy to offer my two cents over email (as well as answers to any other questions you might have about the pattern).

This design is for personal use only, but I'd welcome any inquiries concerning commercial use.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Printer scaling conversions given include 10", 12", 14", 16", 18", and 20" gems

  • NOTE: due to the nature of paper-piecing and the size variations available for this block, estimates are tricky. Nonetheless, just to give you an idea, I would say it's best to allow ~1/2 yd per large block (not including background/"metal")
  • At least 8 monochromatic fabrics of various values in your gemstone's colorway
  • 1 1/4" strips of "metal" fabric for optional bezel setting
  • Background fabric squares (at least 1" wider than desired block size) to convert round block to a square
  • Compass, circle ruler, or pen+string to mark circle on background fabric

You Will Also Need:

  • Printer + paper
  • Iron!
