Pattern Description:

This block was inspired by the ocean and depicts four seagulls circling around a starfish meal. Isn't everyone thinking about the beach this time of year!? You can make one 12x12" block into a pillow, a wall hanging, or an element of a table runner, or assemble multiple blocks to create a larger quilt.

This pdf pattern includes templates to create the 12" block, with fabric notes on each piece to help with accurate piecing, seam matching tips, clear assembly instructions, and a sizing guide for those interested in making a larger quilt.

This pattern does not contain basic paper piecing instructions. If you are a beginner, you can find good tutorials to help you learn the technique on YouTube or with a google search. I've found this to be a helpful starting point:

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • 12" square block (12 1/2" unfinished)

Materials:

  • fabric scraps for the gulls and starfish
  • less than 1/4 yard of fabric for the sky (fat quarter friendly)
  • iron and ironing surface
  • rotary cutter and mat, or sharp scissors
  • ruler (including 1/4" measurement)
  • paper on which to print the pattern
