Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Piece quilt blocks
  • Applique by hand or machine (instructions included)

Pattern Description:

Got a pile of novelty-print scraps? Then make this new spin on an "I Spy" quilt for the kid in your life! Pick prints from his or her favorite theme: pirates or princesses, animals or aliens. Or mix and match--make it sweet, scary, or silly. Through the Keyhole is also a great pattern for Halloween and other holidays.

The quilt can be completed with hand or machine applique; instructions are included for both.

The pattern is delivered as a PDF file, with an 8-page instruction booklet on 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" pages (print two on one standard letter page, or view on your PDF-compatible tablet or e-reader) plus an 8 1/2" x 11" template sheet. US measurements are used throughout.


  • 3/4 yard solid yellow fabric for keyhole plates
  • 1 yard brown wood-grain print fabric for background
  • Assorted novelty prints (25 pieces, each at least 5" x 8")
  • 1 1/2 yards backing fabric
  • 1/4 yard binding fabric
  • 30" x 45" batting (about half a crib-size batt)

You Will Also Need:

  • Template plastic (at least 5" x 8")
