Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Basic piecing; simple binding; folding and creating Tanabata fabric origami blocks

Pattern Description:

There's just something about a mantelpiece that adds such a cozy touch when it comes to holiday decorating. No matter what your decorating tastes are -- country traditional, high Victorian, kid at heart or anything in between -- these instructions will help you sew an eye-catching heirloom that you'll use for years to come.

Created as an add-on for those who have already purchased the Loom&Essence Tanabata Quilt Block primer, these instructions are designed for nine different standard mantel widths ranging from 48 to 96 inches with a standard shelf depth of 8 inches. Detailed measurement charts and diagrams walk you through the process of determining the proper amount of fabric to purchase, and the correct size to cut for your mantel.

No mantel? No worries! The mantelpiece also looks great draped across the back of a sofa. Now that I have completed my holiday mantelpiece, I'm going to whip up a new variation for a few more seasonal events (pink and white for Valentine's Day ... red, white and blue for July 4 ...).

14-page pattern is optimized to display on a computer or tablet screen, and printed on letter-size paper set to landscape (sideways) layout.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Yardage needed depends on size of your mantel. The following is for a 72-inch mantel:

  • 1 yard (assorted) cotton for the star centers.
  • 7/8 yard contrasting cotton for the binding
  • 1.25 yards low-loft batting and backing

  • Tanabata Origami Quilt Block primer (sold separately)
  • Quilting cotton for block background, mantelpiece base, and center stars. Muslin or sheet remnant for backing. Low-loft batting.center

  • Optional: Beads, buttons or sequins for star centers.
  • Decorative thread (rayon or metallic) for top-stitching plus appropriate size machine needle.
  • Recommended: Iron, padded gridded ironing surface such as June Tailor Cut 'n Press
