Pattern Description:

By Jane Hardy Miller

Select a multicolor print as your main fabric. Use the colors in the main fabric to select 4 fabrics for the stacked squares. Be careful not to make the background for the stacked squares too light in relation to the others, as it will tend to jump out. Frames should contrast with both the main fabric and the background fabric.

*Prints that run parallel to the selvage will be turned 90 in the finished quilt.
**Use a nondirectional print for the borders.

Instructions are given for 2 sizes (crib and queen) in the pattern.

Materials:

  • Main fabric: 1 3/8 yards; stacked squares*: 1/4 yard (fat or straight) each of 4 fabrics
  • Background of squares*: 7/8 yard
  • Frames: 1 1/4 yards
  • Borders**: 2 1/8 yards (cut lengthwise) OR 1 3/8 yards (cut crosswise)
  • Backing: 5 yards
  • Binding: 5/8 yard
