Normally I easily sew quilting blocks with ease...wondering why 3 of us are unable to put together this 12" finished block..

When putting 2 - 5" blocks together and diagonally sewing as per photo one cannot get a 4 7/8th square..as well, if a nine patch, wouldn't the centre plain block be same- 4 7/8ths. Not a quitter, am perplexed at not being able to accomplish this project as are the other girls

Your half-square triangles should be 4.5" (or 2.5") before sewing into the block. When starting with 5" (or 3") squares, you will have a little bit to trim on all sides once the HSTs have been made. If you prefer not to have to trim the HST units, use the 4 7/8" (or 2 7/8") squares to start with.
