Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Experience using sewing and serger techniques such as pin tucking.

Pattern Description:

This unique project was designed to provide a modern take on heirloom quilting techniques, and was featured in an episode of the Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting television show. The pattern provides instructions for how to perform the heirloom techniques on your sewing machine or serger. Custom digital quilting designs are also available if you have an embroidery machine.

Techniques and tools introduced with this pattern include:
- Home-made rick-rack -- featuring the Martha Pullen Prairie Point Ruler
- Yo-yo's -- featuring the Clover Quick Yo-Yo Maker Puffing
- Martha Pullen Victorian Bridging
- Martha Pullen Spaghetti Bias
- Pin tucking (serger and sewing options)
- Home-made lace (decorative stitching)

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • The quilt is 45" x 54" when finished.

Materials:

  • 1/8 yard of 5 different fabrics for pinwheels and yo-yo's
  • 2-1/2 yards background -- includes: 3/8 yard for inner border, 1 yard for outer border, 1/8 yard for homemade lace
  • 7/8 yard for heirloom techniques (light pink on cover)
  • 5/8 yard for home-made rick-rack
  • 1/2 yard binding
  • 3 yards backing

  • Martha Pullen* Prairie Point Ruler (model Q10s)
  • 3-1/2 yards Martha Pullen* Victorian Bridging #L-24075
  • 3-1/2 yards Martha Pullen* Spaghetti Bias (for Victorian Bridging)
  • 10 yards of spaghetti bias for outside border
  • Clover Quick Yo-Yo Maker (small)
  • Optional: 15 yards of pin tucking cord**
  • A double needle is recommended for attaching Spaghetti Bias
