Basic Skills Necessary:

  • You should know how to use your sewing machine and how to piece, applique and quilt, or stitch three layers together. There is some hand stitchery to do as well.

Pattern Description:

This is a fun counting quilt! One Pukeko, Two Pukeko, Three Pukeko, Four, Five Pukeko.........until More! I think you get the hang of it now! Pukeko are a bird that inhabits New Zealand who look delightful and often comical although not always loved as they are quite destructice, buut loveable just the same! The quilt has quite a lot of applique that can be done by hand or machine as well as the words of the rhyme that are hand stitched. A delightful quilt which would look fabulous on a wall or cot/bed.


  • 1 1/8 yards fabric for background
  • 1/2 yard fabric for sashing
  • 5/8 yard fabric for border
  • 1/2 yard fabric for binding
  • 1/8 yard fabric for grass
  • Assorted small pieces of fabric for applique

You Will Also Need:

  • Paper-backed fusible web for applique
  • Stranded embroidery cotton for embroidery
  • 48" x 56" batting
  • 48" x 56" backing
  • General sewing supplies
