Pattern Description:

This pattern is for an art quilt that is a very fun twist on the American flag, done all in floral fabrics. With this pattern, you will create a one-of-a-kind flag quilt with floral stripes and a field of appliqued flowers. The flag's stripes are made using smaller scale floral fabrics in a traditional rail fence pattern. And the field of flowers is created via a collage technique using colorful floral fabrics, fusible web and machine raw-edge applique. The directions here are for a decorative wall quilt that measures approximately 26" high by 40" wide. Please know that this pattern is instructions how to make a similar quilt/fabric collage. The look of the quilt will vary given the flower fabrics you already own or can obtain. This is not a kit nor a finished quilt, but a digital file (pdf) with instructions on how to make a quilt that looks like this one.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Approximately 26" high x 40" wide

Materials:

  • An assortment of floral fabrics -- some with large scale, whole flower heads (ranging in size from 1" - 5" in diameter for the field of flowers in the upper left), a floral fabric to use as the background for the upper left field that has sufficient contrast with the flowers to be appliqud to it (a fat quarter, or a piece 16" x 18" will do), and for the stripes of the flag, a combination of about a yard of floral fabrics that vary in the size of the motifs (small and medium) and in value (light, medium and dark). You'll also need some bleached white muslin, thread to blend with the floral fabrics, clear nylon thread for raw edge appliqu, about a yard of double-sided fusible web, batting, backing fabric and binding fabric for this approximately 26" x 40" fabric collage, sewing machine with zig zag stitch

You Will Also Need:

  • Scissors, rotary cutter (& ruler & mat), iron & ironing pad

My interest in making art quilts was jump-started by seeing my dear friend Sara take a variety of patterned fabrics, cut them into pieces and combine them in such an artistic way. As a life-long sewer (having experienced my first sewing triumph with a skating skirt I made in Girl Scouts), I took to quilting quickly. One of the great thrills with this art form is that my options are as infinite as ...
